Will Texas be without a drop to drink?-KERA at DFW Program on The State of Springs tonight

15 February 2007 at 1:33:45 PM

from Bill Gordon of Erath County

According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram article below, the "Texas Parks and Wildlife Department documentary, Texas The State of Springs, is airing Thursday at 8 p.m. on KERA/Channel 13. The one-hour program is part of a continuing survey of the state's water needs. Thursday's documentary tackles the complicated issue of groundwater". With falling water tables and continued population growth, there is an inevitable conflict between supply and demand" the article states. (Emphasis added)

On top of that, we have the Barnett Shale drilling activity that's consuming billions of gallons of fresh water daily, contaminating it during the drilling and hydraulic fracturing process, and then injecting the contaminated waste water back into the ground in disposal/ injection wells all over north central Texas.

It's only going to get worse. A TWDB report released in January, 2006, says that there are already over 5,600 producing gas wells in the Barnett Shale and new wells are being drilled at a rate of 100 per month. All these wells produce salt water along with other oil and gas wastes. This waste has to go somewhere. See TWDB Report at: http://www.twdb.state.tx.us/RWPG/rpgm_rpts/0604830613_BarnetShale.pdf

I have been hearing that the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department cares more about protecting our drinking water resources than the other Texas Agencies - this may be true. I encourage everyone to watch the Texas Parks and Wildlife documentary.
