I've said before that I do not agree with the religious justifications that seek to equate the HPV vaccination with increased promiscuity. But this letter to the editor from a Waxahachie citizen encapsulates my argument.. partial below, in response to Paul Perry's earlier letter to the editor.
This is a blatant attack on parental rights and our ability to discern what is, or is not in the best interest of “our” children..
There is no place in our form of government for such arrogant displays of power. Although there is a need for Executive Privilege, and there is a time and place for Executive Orders, this was not one of those times.
Executive Orders have historically been preserved for times of emergency or natural disaster to prevent harm, or to preserve order. They have also been reserved for times when the legislature was not in session. In this case there was no immediate need for this act.
I, like most of you, have made sure that my children were vaccinated against the myriad of childhood diseases and illnesses that might cause death or disability. I have tried to be a responsible and loving father, although I am less than perfect.
I now feel that part of being that responsible and loving father requires me to resist the attempts of this rogue governor who would place the health and safety of Texas children in jeopardy by forcing an unnecessary vaccine on little girls. Our own medical societies are now coming out against this unwarranted invasion of the family as untested and unproven in the long run.
It seems to me that our entire political environment has lost its collective mind. There is a drastic need for protection from our own elected officials. There seems to have been a loss of the basic understanding of their responsibilities and duties.
We don’t need rogue politicians with their own petty initiatives working hardships and danger on our citizens. We don’t need idiots making life threatening changes and demands at the stroke of a pen. Question now is what do we do about it?
I recommend making the stand against this blatant violation of our children’s and parent’s constitutional right to be free from interference within the family unit. Stand by and you will see more and more intrusions into your freedoms. Do nothing and nothing will be done.
Shame on you Rick Perry, and all those who supported your efforts in this matter.
