On the Commuter Train Near Leander/Cedar Park, Texas

9 February 2007 at 11:31:18 AM

I went down to Austin a couple of days ago on 183 heading south. The drive was fast and smooth, the day was sunny, with cool temperatures. Then I got a little north of Leander and traffic suddenly, about noon-ish was bumper to bumper. It stayed that way until someplace south of Cedar Park and I found myself wondering what had happened to that commuter train that was supposed to be built out that way. My brother, who lives in Austin, told me it hadn't been finished yet and even if it was, it would be hard to wrest people out of their cars.

An article from Monday's A-AS's Ben Wear has the explanation for what's going on as well as an entirely negative view of the rail. What, is Wear being paid by the Toll Road contingent at TxDOT? Anyway.

Just to let you know briefly how that stands, assembly has begun in Switzerland on the first of six diesel-powered rail cars that the agency ordered.

Construction is moving along on the Leander station and has begun on a rail overpass that will carry the Capital Metro line over the intersecting Union Pacific line in Northwest Austin.

Wear's article discusses the cost of the rail versus how many people will actually be riding it at full capacity and whines about the fact that a lot of money has been spent to give relatively few people a rail commute.

I say, So? The money's already been allocated BECAUSE citizens wanted that way to commute. The time to whine about it was when it was being suggested, if it wasn't such a hot idea. But I think it is. It's not like Texas is the first place to do commuter rail, it's just that Texans not only love hogging up traffic in their cars, but are encouraged to do that here INSTEAD of efficient rail.
