Shooting Predators from Helicopters in Erath County, Texas

Saw an article in the Stephenville paper this morning in which a landowner who has horses is upset that her neighbor, with some other neighbors, is planning a hunt for coyotes and feral hogs from the sky.

Floyd said she learned from the Mize Ranch Manager Charles McDonald that the feral hog population on the Mize property is near her fence line. She is concerned her horses will be spooked on the day of the hunt and could be injured or killed...

“I have seven to 10 landowners that have signed landowner agreements and are as happy as can be,” Mize said. “We’re not going to do anything to hurt Mrs. Floyd or (to) hurt her horses. We will not fly over Mrs. Floyd’s place and we will give her ample notice. We are good neighbors.”

Mize says the wild hogs have ruined acres and acres of coastal on his property and the coyotes are killing the baby deer.

“We’ve found lots of baby deer carcasses,” Mize said. “We’re not doing anything illegal. The only thing we’re after is to get the hog and coyote population down.”

I went, a couple of years ago, to a Predator Conference here in Glen Rose at the Somervell County Expo Center, put on by the County Extension agent. The info was great, including photos of what scat looks like, best methods to kill predators and what the drawbacks are, how to recognize what predators might be on your property, as well as facts about how fast, for example, the predators multipled. Around that same time, I heard a presentation at the County Commissioner's meeting by Hornick about hogs on the golf course! The feral hogs burrow in and cause huge holes on property and multiply pretty fast. And who of us out here doesn't walk out at night and heard packs of coyotes howling on some nearby ridge?

Someone told me they saw a story about Hogzilla, a hog over 1000 pounds found in Granbury. I have an uncle that has a feral hog cage he built, named Hogatraz, and he's caught some massive hogs in that. Here's a pic from the internet of what we're talking about.

How'd you like to walk out and see THAT running around in your backyard, digging holes?

I'm sure that it must also be fun to go shooting the predators, especially from a rented helicopter, but at least in my view, it's a good thing to help control the population.
