David Van Os on Stopping the Money Chase

8 February 2007 at 9:57:09 AM

I completely agree with the sentiments expressed below. As long as money plays such a prominent, if not the dominant, role in politics, good people who might otherwise be elected to office but for not having as deep pockets as the next person will be shut out.  From Van Os

In my sincere opinion, the most effective way to stop the obscene money chase is for political candidates to run and get elected who reject it. And how do we do that? It's all in the hands of the people. When we the people learn to demand that political candidates put a halt to the money chase if they expect to receive our votes, then it will happen.

It is alarming to me that today grassroots Democrats are being taught to support the money chase and to lionize as great success stories the Democratic politicians who are the most prolific money chasers.

The ordinary average voter is not looking for which candidate can raise the most money. It is not a criterion at all for most people's voting decisions. The voter is looking for basic esteemed qualities like character, integrity, intelligence, judgment, honor, and courage. When we let "advisors", "leaders", and corporate journalists convince us that the ability to raise tons of money is a measurement of any of these basic social and moral values, we are letting such "advisors" and "leaders" insult our commonsense intelligence and values.

[First person]: Q. If the ability to raise the most money is the top qualification of candidates for public office, why don't we just go into the prisons, pull out the best bank robbers, and make them our public officials?

[Second person]: A. That's what we're already doing!

I didn't make that up. It came from the audience at an upper panhandle courthouse stop.
