ATMOS Gas Company in Texas Smacked Down by Administrative Law Judges

Atmos-you remember-they tried to charge customers for their pricey meals and entertainment, which they used as part of their justification for a rate increase, until they were forced to stop.

Atmos Energy should refund more than $2.5 million to its Metroplex customers, cut rates overall by nearly $23 million annually and stop charging its customers for expensive meals and entertainment.

Expenses highlighted by the judges included dinner for eight at Dallas' III Forks restaurant costing more than $391 per person, $2,750 to $5,000 in donations to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, a $467.48 case of chardonnay and a $961.51-per-night stay at New York City's Four Seasons Hotel

After all, it IS expensive to be sleeping at the Four Seasons Hotel.

That's the conclusion of a panel of administrative-law judges that also found Friday that the utility's acquisition of TXU's North Texas gas-distribution system in 2004 was not in the public interest.

Oh. Must be in reference to Atmos trying to bill customers for replacing poly pipe that has caused explosions in North Texas??????

The panel's findings are a stinging rebuke to the Metroplex gas utility, which had sought to increase rates by more than $56.8 million annually, or about $4 more on a typical monthly bill. A coalition of cities challenging Atmos -- including Fort Worth -- seeks to cut rates by about $5 per month

Best line from Geoffrey Gay

"It vindicates the fact that Atmos had their hands in the cookie jar,"

Now the Texas Railroad Commision does the actual ruling. Let's see if they actually want to follow the judges' recommendations or screw the public in favor of Atmos.
