Natural Gas Pipeline Explosion in Cheyenne, Wyoming and Contaminated Groundwater

12 November 2006 at 1:27:38 PM

As a way to provide a realistic counterbalance to happy talk about gas wells and pipelines, here's a couple of sobering articles.

First, a man died in Cheyenne this weekend when he drove his bulldozer over a natural gas pipeline, which ruptured. The flames could be seen several miles away and one family talks about feeling the house shake.

Twitchell and his 17-year-old son, Tyson, got into the pickup truck and sped along the ranch's dirt roads.
They were excited, they said, but somewhat worried that the blaze would trigger more explosions, as three or four other natural-gas pipelines lay beneath the ground.
The column of fire was giving off a great deal of radiant heat. They were within three-quarters of a mile when they could feel it inside the truck, even with the windows rolled up.
"Words can't explain the size of the fire," Frank Twitchell said.
"It was wa-a-a-y above the power lines," Tyson Twitchell said. "I've never seen a flame like that before. It was at least 300 feet high. At least."

A gas well blowout in Clark, Wyoming, in August has contaminated ground water.

Groundwater in Clark close to the site where a gas well blowout occurred in August appears to be contaminated, said John Corra, director of the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality.

Corra said he had not yet seen complete test results on water from a monitoring well near the Crosby drill site, but it was his understanding they showed "some contamination in it of concern from a standpoint of groundwater."

Somebody driving a bulldozer died in a gas explosion.  Woman with children driving to Target store killed in collision.  Outlaw Target Stores!!!

Let's get reasonable.  The human condition comes with no guarantees.  We all lead pretty safe lives and what we get in return from the collection and distribution of fuel, especially natural gas, far more than offsets any risks involved.  Nurse sticks self with needle, contracts HIV.  Tell your daughters to avoid nursing.  Far too dangerous!!
