On Chet Edwards (US House Dist 17-Texas) and General Area Results -He's STILL representing Bush

8 November 2006 at 8:59:03 AM

As noted on another post, I noticed that two counties actually had more votes for Van Taylor than Chet Edwards. The Cleburne Times Review, which is in Johnson County, comments:

U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, collected 92,777 votes Tuesday to win his ninth term in Congress. Edwards’ opponent, Republican Van Taylor of West, collected 64,356 votes. Vote totals were as of 2:05 a.m. Wednesday with 281 of the 284 precincts in District 17 reporting.

Edwards carried 10 of the 12 counties in District 17. Taylor carried Hood and squeaked ahead by eight votes to carry Johnson County. Taylor received 14,550 votes in Johnson County to Edwards’ 14,542 votes.

With the win, Edwards remains one of only two Democrats representing Johnson County. County Commissioner R.C. McFall is the other one.

Much the same results as for Somervell County. Except that here, Judge Maynard (D) beat out Hank Jones(R), whose wife is the Republican party chair.

“I’m humbled by the overwhelming support Republicans, independents and Democrats who supported my message to work on a bipartisan basis to be an effective leader for our district,” Edwards said. “I’m ready now to roll up my sleeves and go to work for our district.”

Taylor apparently conceded about 11:00 pm.

Incidentally, according to this Waco TV video, Chet will probably be head of the Veterans Affairs and Military Quality Life Subcommittee of the US House Appropriations Committee..

Democratic Congressman Chet Edwards of Waco trounced a Republican challenger Tuesday to keep the district that includes President Bush's Crawford ranch as he defeated Iraq war veteran Van Taylor by about a 20 percent margin.

Republicans have tried repeatedly to oust Edwards, but the lawmaker from Waco is headed to a ninth two-year term.

Republicans said District 17, which stretches from Burleson and Granbury in North Texas to College Station and Navasota, was the most GOP district still represented by a Democrat.
