Ted Ankrum (Running for US House District 10) on HR 5744- Importing Jobs into America Through Additional Green Cards

30 October 2006 at 11:09:38 PM

I don't know much about this race, which has Democrat Ted Ankrum running against Michael McCaul. But I'm interested in what he says about the SKILL Act of 2006 (with companion Senate bill S-2691 introduced by John Cornyn) which

allows 115,000 new green cards for skilled foreign computer and information technology professionals

"We are exporting all our manufacturing jobs to the third world, and importing third-world technology professionals for the high skilled jobs here.”

I've wondered this myself. I know there are technology professionals, in this country, who can do the jobs that high-tech needs. The only possible reason to created additional green cards to import labor is ... to do it cheaper. Otherwise, why would you NOT hire a US citizen?

The SKILL Bill, in addition to increasing quotas for technology professionals, also increases the quota 20 percent each year, without any cap and without any sunset clause.

"This is the decimation of another category of good-paying jobs for Americans and will hurt the economy of Austin and Houston. But, it will be very good for owners and executives of high-tech firms in both places, because they will be able to cut costs. I think this is a bad tradeoff,” said Ankrum.

“Company profits go all around the country and overseas. The salaries of these good jobs would have stayed in our local communities. Mr. McCaul has received $114,500 from companies and executives who would benefit from this legislation, which would create an unlimited import flow of professionals willing to work for cut-rate wages.”

Another good reason NOT to vote for a Republican but for Ankrum, who apparently, unlike Republican McCaul, wants to exercise some protectionism and PROTECT US jobs.
