Border Patrol Officials Wait Till Monday to Release Death Statistics- El Paso Says Fence *Not a Solution*

Border Patrol officials in Washington DC were all set to release their death stats on Thursday. Ooops! Someone must have told them that was the day Bush was doing his Dog And Pony, so they decided to release them Monday.  But Border Network from Human Rights info says:

Fernando Garcia, executive director of the Border Network for Human Rights, said that according to his compilation of migrant fatality numbers from the Border Patrol, the Mexican Consulate and the medical examiner's office, twice as many immigrants died last fiscal year as in the year before.

Garcia said that about 40 immigrants died of dehydration, heatstroke, drowning and other causes in the past year in El Paso and Southern New Mexico, up from about 20 the year before.

"I think the fence will make it even worse," Garcia said.

Might bad relations put a stop to the NAFTA superhighway through Mexico?

Tony Payan, an assistant professor of political science at the University of Texas at El Paso, said he doubted that the bill would help Republicans much, but he predicted it would embitter international relations with Mexico.

"(Mexico President elect Felipe) Calderón is going to Washington soon. What is Bush going to say? 'Welcome! I'm going to build a wall between us'?" Payan said.

Officials south of the border have already decried the border fence as an out-of-fashion Berlin Wall.

That's what I thought, too.
