Here Comes Video Surveillance VIA PDA, Handsets and Laptops

22 October 2006 at 11:43:31 AM

Seems like this puts video surveillance up a notch, in that if you can surveill someone on a PDA, you could be, say, walking up behind that person and recording over his or her shoulder, as opposed to a fixed camera on the wall. Also would put a whole new meaning into filming political events (good time to remind that SID MILLER doesn't want to be recorded at the Monday debate and has threatened to walk out if he is.)

Moving beyond the four walls of corporates, malls and shops, video surveillance is now set to become mobile, courtesy a new generation of devices allowing security monitoring through laptops, handsets and PDAs. US-based mobile manufacturer company UTStarcom, which has come out with a pocket PC on CDMA platform is taking the lead in making video surveillance mobile and plans to make the technology available in India.

I looked up UTStarcom to see if I could find some techie details on how this might be done.

UTStarcom, Inc. (Nasdaq: UTSI - News), a global leader in IP access networking and services, today introduced mVision, the most comprehensive, end-to-end Television over IP (TVoIP) solution available today. mVision is the first solution designed from the ground up to enable carriers to deploy very-large-scale streaming video content over a switched network architecture. This new unicast/multicast distributed system scales to support millions of users and hundreds of thousands of content hours, and spans multiple cities, states, or even an entire nation. ..

With mVision Teleshifting(TM), subscribers may watch any broadcast TV program or premium video content 'Internet style' at any time they wish, and record weeks or months of content. Additional services may include pass-through broadcast TV and value-added applications such as Video on Demand (VoD), personalized content and TV schedules, interactive TV, and unlimited data applications. Operators can even offer applications such as video surveillance, video network gaming, video telephony, and distance learning.
