Chet Edwards/Van Taylor Debate Notes (US House District 17- Texas)

Wasn't able to attend, out of town, but here's some details from local news about the debate

Issues, collected from From the Statesman, Houston Chronicle, Cleburne Times-Review

  • Iraq war veteran Taylor said Edwards has voted against building a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, stationing border patrol agents there and sending troops to stop illegal immigration.

Edwards, who said Taylor has distorted his voting record, said he has voted for the wall and for more border patrol agents. He said he voted against sending active-duty soldiers there because it would have stretched the military too thinly.

You know, Van Taylor is LYING about this. I distinctly remember when Edwards voted for the wall, because I DIDN'T LIKE HIS VOTE.

  • When Taylor asked Edwards why he led the fight against prayer in schools, Edwards shot back that he never led such a fight. He said that he opposed government-sanctioned prayer in the late 1990s because it could lead to the government ordering children to pray to other gods. "What I led the fight against was the government telling me what subject to pray about. That's the act of a lifelong Christian," Edwards said, drawing hearty applause and one loud "Amen!" from the crowd of 225 people

Taylor wants to use negative and misleading attack ads about Edwards, refused to sign a pledge with Edwards abstaining from such, and was called on his BS about social security

But Taylor, who did not sign Edwards' pledge, said the congressman has been attacking him for a year, including calling Taylor an outsider after his move to the district from Dallas last year.

One Taylor campaign flier has been called misleading and inaccurate by the AARP, which sought to halt its distribution. The flier shows a close-up of an elderly woman's face and says: "Seeing is believing. Chet Edwards lets seniors down on Social Security. Your eyes don't lie."

The AARP said quotes in the flier attributed to Edwards are not in the AARP's 2006 voter guide as the flier indicates. The nonpartisan organization also said the mailout gives the impression that the AARP opposes Edwards.

Taylor's campaign said Edwards' comments are in another AARP document, not the voter guide. Campaign officials said they disagreed that in the flier the AARP appears to oppose Edwards, but they said it was only sent one time.

Edwards said other claims in the mailout also are false.

From the Cleburne paper

“In winning 11 campaigns, I’ve never seen the level of mean-spirited, distorted attacks that I’ve seen in this race,” Edwards said when asked about the tone of the race.

Taylor on spending, but when he was asked specifically what HE would cut in order to fix the budget, he had nothing in his bag.

Taylor called his and Edwards’ stances on lowering taxes, cutting spending, family values, gun rights and illegal immigration “two very different perspectives of how government can and should be.”

“If you want to see more spending, I suggest sending my colleague back to Washington,” Taylor said. “If you want to rein in spending, then vote for me.”

Edwards replied by saying Taylor was unable to name a specific area of spending he would cut when asked by the Dallas Morning News, which subsequently endorsed Edwards.

Heh! Seems that Taylor is a bit of an impetuous hot-head.

Such exchanges grew heated at times with moderator Joe Ripple, a Cleburne ISD assistant superintendent, reminding Taylor at one point that he, not the nominees, asked the questions.
