A Few Chet Edwards-Van Taylor Debate Notes

U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards renewed his call to halt all negative campaigning while Van Taylor brought up new allegations concerning a 20-year-old tax bill Saturday as the District 17 candidates faced off for their first debate.

Taylor, a Republican from West, is seeking to unseat Edwards, D-Waco, who has been a Central Texas congressman since 1991 and sits on the powerful House appropriations committee. The two met for the televised forum at KAMU-TV studios on the Texas A&M University campus.

He chided Taylor for calling him the "career politician" when Taylor was the one "digging up some long-past case that I'm not familiar with."

"I think people are tired of this kind of 'gotcha' politics," he said, moments before asking Taylor again to call a truce on negative advertising.

Of course Taylor isn't going to do it, because that's how The Grand Ole Predators party is. How about a question about how good of friends Taylor is with Tom Reynolds? Eh? Hmmm?

National Republican Congressional Committee chairman Tom Reynolds has said the race is important because it is the nation's most Republican district represented by a Democrat.

So what DID Van Taylor have in his bag of tricks to go after Chet on? Something that happened 20 years ago that Edwards couldn't even remember (but I'll bet he does by the next debate!)

Taylor used the debate at Texas A&M University to ask Edwards about his role at Allied Seafood Co., of which he said Edwards was once a director. Taylor accused the company of owing more than $6,000 in taxes, penalties and fees.

Edwards, who said he worked in the seafood business 20 years ago with his brother and father, said he couldn't immediately respond to the charges because he had not heard of them before.

He then chided Taylor for "digging up some long-past case that I'm not familiar with," the Bryan-College Station Eagle reported Saturday.

"I think people are tired of this kind of 'gotcha' politics," said Edwards, setting up his proposal for the truce.
