MTGCD is going to hire a hydrologist to determine how much groundwater is available under Erath and Comanche counties. They are NOT, however, going to stop issuing permits to pump until after the study.
Some, including the board’s ex-chairman Boyd Waggoner, have asked the MTGCD to stop issuing water well permits until the MTGCD has a better handle on the amount of groundwater available for use and so that the valuable resource isn’t wrongly depleted.
The MTGCD issued five more permits on Thursday, including one that Waggoner and a group of concerned citizens said could potentially allow an alarming amount of groundwater to be pumped from the aquifer.
MTGCD General Manager Joe Cooper concurred, saying the applicant — Rough Creek Lodge of Glen Rose — will only be able to produce about 240 acre feet of groundwater per year despite Waggoner and others pointing to paperwork that indicates the well could pump up to 9,000 acre feet of groundwater per year.
Stephens said the paperwork gives a false idea of reality.
“That may not mean what it says, but it’s clear to me,” Waggoner said.
Waggoner, who remains on the MTGCD board, continued Thursday to express concern about the MTGCD’s permitting practices, while Stephens and other MTGCD members continued to cite Texas Water Development Board statistics that indicate the two-county MTGCD has enough groundwater to last for years.
