Should a School District Support a Pro-Life Christian Program To Present to School Children? Alvarado (Johnson County) says Yes

Noticed that Alvarado will be using a Christian-run organization with specific idealogies to teach sexual education to grades 7-12 in AISD.

A new sexual education program preaching abstinence-only is on the way to Alvarado ISD.

The program, called Teens Are Saying kNOw, promotes abstinence from sexual activity and encourages free-thinking and independence, said Jane Burton, executive director at the Burleson Pregnancy Aid Center. The center is sponsoring the TASk program at Alvarado.

Burleson Pregnancy Aid Center's board:

The Burleson Pregnancy Aid Center was established in October, 1986. Founded by a small group of concerned Christians, who wish to seek to educate the public on the choices available to a woman who finds herself in a crisis pregnancy situation. We are a non-profit, tax-exempt organization, staffed by volunteers and we rely completely on donations for support. All gifts are tax deductible

Their philosophy

The PAC is an evangelistic arm of the local church and with all counseling services based upon the authority of God's word. We are committed to a holistic ministry in meeting the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of those we serve; therefore, every counselor should be equipped to share the gospel message of salvation and discipleship as opportunity arises (II Timothy 4:1-2).

What about the origins of Crisis Pregnancy Centers of Greater Phoenix?

Crisis Pregnancy Centers of Greater Phoenix is a Christian-run medical organization that operates four clinics around the Valley. The clinic doesn't require that patients walk out agreeing with its pro-life viewpoint or sexual abstinence.  "We don't make it a mission to prophetize to people," Brown said.
In addition to STD testing, the clinic also offers adoption services, pregnancy counseling and abortion information, which is free-of-charge and given openly despite the organization's Christian, pro-life roots, Brown said.  Unlike other pregnancy clinics, however, the organization does not offer contraception or abortions. That, Brown said, would run contrary to their goal of discouraging premarital sex and reducing unwanted pregnancies. The contraception philosophy is not shared by Planned Parenthood or the ASU Health and Wellness Center.

I don't agree with sex ed being taught in the schools but since it is, I think it should include ALL options, rather than pressing a specific religious viewpoint (and there's no mistake about it, the abstinence only program doesn't come to the school without an agenda). It looks as if it costs nothing to the schools to teach, so perhaps that is one reason Alvarado decided to put it into the curriculum, but I would expect that attendance, since it is sponsored by a religious organization, would be voluntary and not mandatory.
