Will Enlisted in the Military Be Forced to be RFID-Chipped? RFID Implants in Your Skin

20 September 2006 at 11:26:30 PM

Was reading an article about Verichip, which is looking to implant chips in babies (well, FIRST, they are working and have sold a bracelet for infants that has an RFID chip in the plastic). In the article, there are two other attention-getting pieces. One, that insurance companies are looking into the benefits of implanting RFID chips in patients. Yeppers. Don't worry, though, you have to have a chronic disease, in other words be somewhat capacitated, when they come for you to chip ya!

Verichip, counting its cash, loves the idea.

However, VeriChip itself has said that the chips could be used to control access to secure areas. And news reports state that the Department of Homeland Security has considered using the chips to track people.

I know they'll be using RFID chips in our driver's licenses, passports, and probably toll tags, including the Trans Texas Corridor. Privacy? Feeling Free? You won't miss it, will you? Will you?

And what about the military enlisted, who can hardly say NO.

"In the civilian market, basically what happens is you elect to get a microchip, you have the procedure done—it's like a shot of penicillin—the patient is given a unique log in and password and it is up to the individual what they want to put in their personal profile," said Philbin.

"It can be as much as an organ donation profile and advanced directives or as little as just a person's name and doctor's number."

The problem, privacy advocates say, is that VeriChip is targeting individuals who may not have a say in whether or not they are chipped—immigrants, the elderly and the enlisted. (The CEO of Applied Digital, the parent company of VeriChip, recently suggested the government consider implanting RFID chips into the arms of registered immigrants to address immigration issues.)
