Texas Water Development Board is Holding Hearings about Reservoir Plans

20 September 2006 at 10:04:29 PM

Boy. I happened to see that there was a meeting held tonight in Fort Worth about plans by the TWDB to put in reservoirs. Too far and too soon for me to go too, so I found a list of meetings in the area. Waco looks closest to us, on the 26th. Here's the pros and cons of what may be discussed.

The regional plan for North Texas calls for $13.2 million to be spent on four East Texas reservoirs. The key project is the construction of the 62,000-acre Marvin Nichols Reservoir on the Sulphur River and a 130-mile pipeline to North Texas, at a cost of $2.15 billion.

Opponents of the state plan say it is overly dependent on new dam construction and doesn't call for enough conservation measures or efficient water use.

Supporters of the plan say North Texas, where 13 million people are expected to live by 2060, needs the additional reservoirs to meet demand in a record drought.
