Uh-Oh- Eagle Mountain Lake- How Many Gas Rigs Can Be Put into PARK LAND?

17 September 2006 at 9:45:48 AM

I saw this on the video snip from DFW news the other day, that the deal for Eagle Mountain Lake park also included being able to put gas rigs on it. Today, the Star-Telegram has an article about how citizens aren't able to see what the deal actually is.

Some people wonder whether the wildlife, and the visitors who go there, can peacefully co-exist with the natural gas wells that are also planned for the site.

State park officials said that there are already two wells on the land -- one is completed, the other just got under way -- and that another four to five pad sites could be added. Apparently as much as 10 acres could be set aside for natural gas exploration.

Besides the obvious environmental questions, the large looming one is: Why, since the State of Texas paid for that parkland in the first place, is it now brokering the sale through a non-profit trust that partners public and private interests... and thus, because it's not the State of Texas doing it, it apparently isn't open to scrutiny.. by CITIZENS in the State of Texas. The letter of intent from the "Trust for Public Land" is ... private.. so we don't know who the donors are

The state bought the Eagle Mountain land in 1980 for $3.8 million.

The deal is being pulled together by the Trust for Public Land, a San Francisco-based nonprofit group that specializes in developing parkland through public-private partnerships. In addition to about $3 million contributed by the water district and Tarrant County to buy the land, the group reportedly is expected to get donations from TXU, AT&T and others.

You have to wonder why Texans wouldn't be able to know who it is that wants to donate to land that was bought by taxes, and also what interest those private donors (like TXU) would have in the land.

Isn't using the Trust for Public Land with donors such as TXU, etc just a shell game for selling the land on Ebay? Slightly different scenario, but same outcome-the parkland is no longer pristine, and corporations get their mitts into it. In fact, the same issues that I talked about originally are here- Remember when Geren said that it was possible but not probable that all the 400 acres would be used for parkland- WHAT IS ANY DIFFERENT? It's also PROBABLE NOW that all 400 acres won't be used for parkland-SOME of it is going to be used for gas leases, by corporations that are using a middleman with a *green* sounding name to broker the deal. Same effect, but from a PR standpoint it hid the crap under a pile of grass.

I continue to think Perry is scum. So's Geren.
