Texas Retired Teachers-Perry Wants to Cut Pension Funds By Taking from Healthcare Benefits

16 September 2006 at 8:34:56 AM

Boy O Boy. Perry's been on a roll lately, cutting funds to parks, pushing through the Trans Texas Corridor even though people (except businessmen or politicos with their hands out) don't want it, property taxes not what they were supposed to be... now this.

Retired educators and public school employees are bristling at the possibility that the state’s contribution to their multibillion-dollar pension system could be cut.

They also are angry that one potential way to protect the pension funding calls for increasing retirees’ healthcare costs.

“We’re going to demand full funding at every step in this process, with the hope that eventually the government and leadership will see the light and bring that funding at least close to where it ought to be,” said Ted Molina Rabb, legislative liaison for the American Federation of Teachers, at a recent budget hearing to discuss pension costs.

Gov. Rick Perry’s office has asked the Teacher Retirement System of Texas to budget based on the state contributing 5.6 percent of employees’ salaries, compared with the current 6 percent. The system is requesting that the state increase its contribution to 7.19 percent.

I value our teachers and that's one item that I'm glad to pay taxes for. Those that have been working for the public education system and are now retired shouldn't have to make a choice between whether they get funds for retiredment that they were promised ... or see a doctor.

Another good reason to vote for Ernie Casbeer-he's a teacher and understands the value of our education system. Sid Miller? In a previous vote in September, 2005, Sid Miller voted to cut back teacher pensions and retirement benefits.

Shame on Perry. And Shame on Sid Miller.
