More on Toll Roads in Texas In General - with 121 as the example

I wrote the other day about the 121 toll road opening up (I used to live in The Colony). In the article, which seems to have been written by a stenographer repeating a press release, the toll road was to open on September 1st, and I wondered where all the opposition was. No one was quoted in the article opposing this, and yet, I KNOW from living up there that it was NOT popular and a LOT of people opposed it. (Updating to add that I found I had recorded Amy Manuel at the TTC hearing in Tarrant County-see here.) SOMEBODY must be telling Perry something, though, because in the ribbon-cutting he did, he said (and I'm paraphrasing) "I'm going to let people drive on our roads FOR FREE until after the election!"... because that's what he really meant.

Now, we don't live near 121 so why should YOU care what they're doing up there? BECAUSE Sid Miller and the Texas Lege have decided that our major roads from now on will be TOLL ROADS, so the WAY they do things will no doubt be replicated in other roads if they get away with it.

There were several things I got irritated at in this article. First, as noted before, if you decide, as a driver, that you don't want to get a toll tag, your license plate will be photographed and you will be billed automatically. Second, the way it gets used and getting feedback on it was one of the excuses Ric "Corruption Is My Middle Name" Willliamson used to explain why 121 is being delayed for opening-in other words, if you were on that road and you just didn't feel like TELLING TxDOT what you thought about getting photographed, you weren't doing what you were supposed to be doing, and SHAME ON YOU. Pfffftttt! If that were ME, the last thing I'd feel like doing, unless it was to tell TxDot where to stick it, would be to send in when and where I was on the road-oh, yeah, I LOVE giving people information about how to track my movements.

Since the road informally opened in mid-July, motorists whose vehicles were photographed have been mailed forms asking them to verify the time and date they used the road, as recorded by the state's high-tech equipment.

But apparently few motorists are taking the time to mail in their responses, so state officials aren't certain the equipment is working properly.

"We're not getting enough feedback," said Ric Williamson of Weatherford, the Transportation Commission chairman.

Have to add right here that I read the other day about Rick Perry with regard to TTC that he was getting plenty of feedback about THAT, but he didn't care. They just... don't... care.

And finally, Rick Perry says he didn't make the decision to delay opening 121. Yeah, sure. He's a liar and a politician(maybe I should have only used ONE adjective for that, eh?)
