Summer of Outside Projects (2017)

I've been hugely busy for much of this summer. Redoing the porch, which involves resanding, replacing some old boards and restaining. Optimistically, I thought I might be done by the end of August but I know now that simply won't happen. But as long as I'm making progress, that's good. Here's a breakdown of what has been done so far, with a few pictures.

The first part was the front porch, which has a ceiling. I had painted the porch some years back but didn't prime it first. Thus, over time, the paint chipped in spots and generally looked worn down. I had to remove all the paint first, started by trying to use paint stripper. Ugh, that was a mistake. I am not a fan of stripper at all, but I found a tool that was fairly inexpensive, called the Wagner Paint Eater, which, along with my 5 inch sander, did the trick to get all the paint off the porch. After I finished stripping the paint and had done some light sanding, I mixed a little Penetrol in with porch stain and put on 2 coats. The test will be when I need to use a hose to clean the porch floor; the Penetrol is supposed to extra help the water bead up. I also had 2 pieces of porch furniture to sand and repaint. One, a rocker, is done, used an outside paint that also has primer in it. The second is a bench that is taking longer to get all the gunky paint off. I hope to have it all sanded within the next few days and painted by week's end. Here are some pics

Have more to do on the porch on the south side. The good news is that none of that part of the deck was painted so it requires replacing some boards, sanding, and staining. No idea how long that will take but probably months...

Remaining projects- housing for an automatic cat feeder, an automatic poultry door based on a car antenna to move the door up and down, and a fire pit. I called the fire department to ask about whether having a fire pit breaks the rules about outside fires. Recreational fires do not, except in times of burn bans. I'll post pictures of these 3 projects as I get them done.
