Heard Brooke Gladstone talk about her new book "The Trouble With Reality" on Think (KERA) the other day.Was particularly struck by this part, which I have excerpted in audio.

Rough Transcript -Gladstone is referring to Donald Trump

Gladstone" Your question was, what does it mean, what does it do for him, to say one lie after another and what Mosha Getson (sp?) told me is that, basically, like Putin, he is asserting dominance over reality itself. In other words, he's saying "It doesn't really matter, everyone who speaks to you is a liar, you like my story better, it validates you, you recognize yourself in it, I offer you redemption, I promise to take a rigged system and finally rig it for you. I've made a deal with you, the ultimate autocratic deal, you believe what I say whenever I say it even if it contradicts your own experience, even if I say something else on another day, it doesn't really matter cause you're in on the joke. We all know that it's all a lie".

Once you've created that kind of situation, then you never have to answer for anything again. If you can convince the people that support you that reality can't be known and that he himself can simply pick and choose among the facts at a given moment, you know, the Congressional Budget Office is good and reliable when it says this, it's bad, fake news, when it says that, and so on, then you can build your world without any concerns about what is really happening outside of your sphere. And this is a kind of relief and a kind of permission and it is a deal. Actually, there are lots of historians that worry that when you destroy the notion that there is even a common pool of facts that we can all dip into, that such a thing doesn't exist, that can exist that half or the whole group of people that need to use those facts won't accept them or only accept the ones that they prefer to accept, then you can't have democracy, because democracy is the ultimate negotiation. And if you can't agree on a common pool of facts, then there is no negotiating, no incentive to look for a solution if you think you don't have to. And that that opens the door to authoritarianism. There are many historians across the spectrum who fear for the future of democracy.
