While looking at the agenda for May 8, 2017 for the Somervell County Commissioners Court, I noticed that item 10 is to
Discuss/take action on obtaining an appraisal for the following properties: 1.) 1505 NE Big Bend Trail; and 2.) 100 NE Barnard Street.
Google Maps indicates that the first property is that basketball park located off 67 near Sonic. CORRECTION: After attending the Somervell County Commissioners Court meeting on May 8, 2017, the buidling in question is the one that currently leases to the CVB, the old jail that has the dinosaur in front on the north side of hwy 67. The second is the building that houses the genealogy center. Or rather, *housed* the genealogy center, as some of the materials that were there have been relocated to the Somervell County Library on Allen Drive. Not all, some materials are in storage and some will be sold. The genealogy materials will be in the meeting room at the library as well as the reference room. There is just no way for all the books, records, photos, etc that Paluxy Valley Archives has, which were also stuffed into the 2nd floor, to fit in the library.
So, apparently, Somervell County wants to sell
the park the old jail and the building on Barnard. (I heard a rumour before that Danny Chambers attempted to work a deal with the City of Glen Rose to have them take over running the park by Sonic as well as the soccer park, in exchange for more money in an agreement for Animal Control... failed, apparently.) I have mixed feelings about it. On the one hand, glad to see that the commissioners are looking ahead to when property taxes will not be coming in as strongly has they have been, on the other, the Paluxy Valley Archives in the location it has been is a real draw for downtown. It doesn't appear that the county pays property tax on it. And last I checked, I believe that everyone working there was a volunteer.
I've heard that the commissioners gave them till July 1, 2017 to be out.
