Love Bats? Waco offering a course in bat-hunting

29 August 2006 at 1:02:58 PM

I remember when I went to a family reunion in Austin and one of my cousins told me I needed to come see the bats on the Congress Street bridge. So we all jumped in the car and drove down below the bridge right before dusk to watch the bats come wheeling out and fly away (I DO wish I'd brought an umbrella for the uh, bat guano that rained on us). A few years later, when staying downtown on business, I went out from the hotel to watch the bats fly down the river.

Now. Would I want to take a COURSE that would let me get all up close and personal with those bats?

One local spot with a lot of bats is Russell Gym at Baylor University. Hundreds of them live behind the brick facade, she said.

“If you walk to Russell Gym, it’s no secret,” Merchant said. “You smell them. They have a very distinct odor.”

Merchant said she hopes the class gives people an appreciation for bats and dispels some myths about them. Although many people fear them, they are not aggressive and are no more likely to carry rabies than other mammals, she said.
