Weather's been so nice around here lately. A little cool, but sunny. Not like winter at all. I'm getting into the habit of preparing lunches on the go and fixing to add breakfasts to that as well. One main reason is to ensure that lunch meals are healthy and not fast food centric and the other is to make a change for night meals to be lighter and less heavy. Fun to do, but like all things, have to do them as a pattern for a month or so to be in my own good habit.
Does the Rowan County Board of Commissioners’ current prayer policy violate the U.S. Constitution? ...
At the Rowan County Board meetings, the chairman directs the public to stand for the invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance, the meeting is called to order and then there is another invocation or prayer, according to the filing. Lund, Voelker and Montag-Siegel are not Christian but the vast majority of the prayers are, the document states.
“Commissioners make clear that they intend for the audience to participate and benefit from the prayers by directing the audience to stand for the prayers, typically beginning ‘with some variant of ‘let us pray’ or please pray with me,’’ as well as embracing the audience-focused, proselytizing nature of their prayers,” the petition states.
But the argument that more restrictive copyright rules are necessary to protect the industry and artists does not stand up to scrutiny.
First, in the era of popular services like Netflix and Spotify, it ignores that music industry revenues in 2015 saw “the biggest increases in the past two decades,” while the film industry has reported record-breaking earnings—all while piracy is at an all-time low.
Second, it ignores the significant promotional benefits creators receive from hosting their work on free, ad-based platforms, and the ample evidence that more restrictive copyright law does not mean less piracy.
And third, claiming stronger rules will “reward creativity” is highly dubious in a world where copyright is used to silence critics, prevent sports fans from filming a match, take downa video of a child dancing to Prince, or otherwise censor speech online.
