I feel hilariously happy for the New Year (2017)

There is just something very exhilarating at the end of one year as we go into a New Year that makes me feel all revived and fresh, like there's a brand new year just waiting, like a fresh tablet of paper, to have good things written on it. And I can do anything I want (within the law, of course! )

My grand uncle passed away recently. He was a wonderful person and I spent many years in touch with him over a hobby we both have in common. I found myself today wanting to ask him something about some information I came across and sadly, I can't any more. I do not believe in an afterlife, I believe completely that while we are alive we should live the best and most full life we can, and his death reminds me of that. He will live in my fond memories, with a stature befitting a kind, generous, and also feisty man who stood up for principles and was willing to fight for them.

The life of the dead is placed in the memory of the living. -Cicero

I have thought for a long time that I took after him in some essential ways, and it makes me proud to be a descendant.

I love those who can smile in trouble, who can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. 'Tis the business of little minds to shrink, but they whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves their conduct, will pursue their principles unto death. -Leonardo da vinci

At the same time, life just can't be wasted. When my father died, I vowed I would do certain things with yet another hobby that he loved as well as I, woodworking. It's been over 5 years and I stil haven't done what I wanted to and it wasn't that I had a lack of time. I had all the time in the world, but I chose to do other things.

5For the living know that they will die,but the dead know nothing;they have no further reward, and even their name is forgotten.6Their love, their hate and their jealousy have long since vanished;never again will they have a part in anything that happens under the sun.7Go, eat your food with gladness, and drink your wine with a joyful heart, for God has already approved what you do. 8Always be clothed in white, and always anoint your head with oil. 9Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun—all your meaningless days. For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun. 10Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.-Ecclesiastes 9:5-10

One area that has been arresting for a number of years has been politics. 2016 has finally, utterly, and completely put the nail into my thoughts that only people of principle run and are elected to office. That includes both the national election, as well as local government. Not that there aren't some who are good people, but it's been shocking to note the degree of corruption infused in those who wield power without accountability and transparency. The presidential primary disabused me of the notion that the Democratic party was somehow more fair than Republicans (witness what happened to Bernie Sanders). I'm done with party politics forever after this cycle, and if another candidate such as Hillary Clinton comes up a second time, I won't be voting at all even where Democrats so desperately try to paint their opposition as evil in order to scare people into voting for a lesser person. And the idea I had for so long that local politics at least was so much purer and accountable has been dragged in the dust, especially over the blatantly undemocratic actions of a few rogue men who are elected officials in Somervell County

Nothing is more sad than the death of an illusion. -Koestler

We all have only so many years to experience and enjoy life. When I was younger the whole world stretched out in front of me like a highway view in Nevada. I intend to make a compelling effort to follow in those directions this year that my uncle set down and let other pursuits take a back seat. What is so great is that it feels like scraping barnacles off a ship, casting off the physical and mental shackles of previous choices. I hope to remember and feel so gloriously free and happy for much of the upcoming year as I do today

And that you, dear reader, also have plans for a fulfilling year too.
