The New Normal- Or How The Latest Terror Threat Helps Wimpy Women Clean Out Their Purses

12 August 2006 at 10:51:10 AM

Last night when watching Countdown, an inferior female standin for Olbermann introduced the segment for the Airports Liquids Clean Out no fewer than six times as "The New Normal". What's the implication of that? If you don't like being frisked and having your possessions thrown out so that you can ride a crowded bus in the sky, you're not normal? Or perhaps the subtext was "Get with the program. Life has changed, you WILL get used to whatever we do in the guise of keeping you safe and dang it, that will be normal to you... or else".

Read a similar article today, entitled "Female Fliers Trade Comforts for Safety"  in which the reporter interviewed women at the airport and lightheartedly suggested that at least the terror threat got them to clean out their purses. Ha Ha! Some women were at least smart enough to put their makeup in their luggage, but for those who had their makeup thrown in the trash, they were just happy they were being safe.

"I would've liked to touch up my lipstick right now," said Sally Carmenita, 36, who was waiting for her baggage to arrive from a Las Vegas flight on America West. "But it's better that they're being safe."

Stephaine Mayne, 16, opted to check in her Revlon cosmetics and stick deodorant, which she usually carries with her to prevent them from melting.

"Now all I have is two books for school, my wallet and cell phone," said Mayne, of Charlotte, N.C., "but if it makes us all safer, than who really cares?"

Gee. That's the same rationale Bush uses for spying on Americans, for invading other countries who have not harmed us. In fact, you could use that excuse for a lot of things, eh? Yes, I don't much care for the police coming into my house at night without knocking because they think I might decide in the future to break the law, but if it makes us all safer.....? I'm happy to let the goverment have all my medical records without getting a search warrant first, ala the Patriot Act, because if it makes us all safer..... ?

Well, THIS woman isn't a dang wimp. It isn't like flying is the only choice of how to get from one place to another, and maybe some day it will be that there will be roadblocks along all the highways, or everyone will be required to have an RFID toll tag to track movements, black boxes in your cars without your knowledge or permission (oh, right, there already is!) and I'll have to confront the idea, again, that it isn't *normal* for me to not want to subject myself to searches or give up stuff just to get from one place to another. "Your Papers Please, and also Throw Away All Your Belongings" will be Normal and woe to the person who doesn't want to fit in, and is thus the crazy one for wanting... to have privacy and be free... and not be threatened into submission by the "But you'll be safe" argument.
