Waking Up Texas from the TTC (Trans Texas Corridor) Complacency

There are two things TxDot and Rick Perry are counting on for this election.

  • One, that most people, if they have heard at all of the TTC, don't know or don't realize they *should* have an interest in it.
  • Two, that people that do know about it tend to assume that, because it is particular routes in particular parts of Texas, the other counties can remain ignorant or uninvolved.

We have to stop those assumptions in their tracks. Every person from whatever county in this state needs to be educated that this having toll roads for all major roads in the state is a Texas legislature policy decision-that it is okay with them to raid monies meant for transportation and transfer them to the general fund, and then justify why there's no money for the state to pay for highways and we MUST have private, foreign companies building and running them.

What I am going to do in my own county is arrange a followup TTC meeting that is entirely non-partisan and focuses on the TTC issues that citizens should be concerned about. I had been approached by someone else who wanted to do a followup meeting but it turned out she was working for a specific candidate. I think, in view of the fact that the TTC is a non-partisan issue (heck, Republicans put it into their state meeting as a platform-AGAINST), it's a better idea to have a meeting that talks about how we all, commonly, as Texans, need to fight this. Besides putting an ad in the paper, I think I might go to the stores and ask if I can put a flyer in the window a week in advance so as many people as possible know about it.

I know I blog mostly about TTC lately but it's really because I consider this to be the most important issue facing Texans right now because it embodies the idea that citizens are trumped by greed and corporations... that eminent domain laws that protect people's property can have exceptions if it suits those who are supposed to be representing us... that global free trade which is killing our Texas economy and job market while bringing in cheap crap from other countries and outsourcing our own jobs is better than being protectionist.... that, despite the outcry over Dubai Ports, the nation seems to believe that it's okay to keep selling, giving, or renting our infrastructure, such as our HIGHWAYS, dang it, to foreign companies instead of, oh, say, to people of this country or Texans to run. ... so many things. Texans, every single Texan, needs to know about this. And I ask that anyone reading please do what you can in your own county and notifying every county that adjoins your county and asking THEM to notify the counties that adjoin them... till everyone has an opportunity to hear and understand.
