Tyler and Palestine, Texas Papers on Bell's Whistlestop at the Texas State Railroad in Palestine

WHISTLE STOP: Chris Bell (center), Democratic candidate for governor, speaks at the Texas State Railroad’s Palestine depot on Saturday, flanked by Texas House candidate Sharon Davis (left) and state comptroller candidate Fred Head.(Photo:Herb Nygren Jr.)

Palestine Herald- “Last year Texas made more than $100 million of a sporting goods tax specifically created to fund our state parks like this one,” Bell said. “Yet across the state, parks are scratching financially to the point where they can barely afford to keep the gates open. How did this happen? It happened because for the last six years Rick Perry has been raiding money from the Texas parks to pay for other programs. For every dollar that Texans pay towards the sporting goods tax, less than 20 cents will wind up here for our state parks.”

Bell disagreed with Perry’s call for cutting 10 percent more from the state parks’ budget and the idea to sell some state parks.

“Rick Perry and Carole Strayhorn brag about a balanced budget but it’s all just a shell game to them,” Bell said. “Texans pay a tax on sporting goods that was specifically created to fund parks but instead the money gets raided for other projects while entrance fees to the parks gets jacked up to make up the difference. I’d like to hear them explain how that’s any different than a tax hike.”

My favorite comment is from Fred Head (Incidentally, I have video of this)

Holding a photograph of himself in front of the construction of the Texas State Railroad, Head reminded those in attendance that he had been involved in the process to get the railroad set up as a state park in the early 1970s, and he criticized state officials from the area for not doing more to protect the park, including State Rep. Todd Staples (R-Palestine).

“The people you have in Austin, I believe, have failed you in not taking care of this matter,” Head said. “Mr. Staples, your state representative, has done a very poor job of being a steward for this wonderful facility, and as Chris has already said, they have not taken care of funds that have been provided for this park. If they had done their job, we would not be here arguing about whether we’re going to have a park or not.

“You might think it’s a little bit harsh for me to want to jump on some folks today but I’m sick of it, ladies and gentlemen. I’m sick of seeing you folks in this county having to fight about every six months about whether there’s going to be a park or not. You need to leave these people out of the equation. They need to go back home and learn that the public offices belong to the people, not to them.”
