Going to go, with the camera. Good issue for them both. Perry has been cutting money to the state parks, and the park in Rusk is one that has been suffering for it.
The Texas State Railroad needs your help.
BUDGET CUTS ARE KILLING TEXAS STATE PARKS
Severe budget cuts to Texas Parks and Wildlife, have drastically impacted the Texas State Railroad and the adjacent Rusk State Park. We lost a number of employees with the cutbacks, and started the 2006 season without trains running from the Palestine Depot. The TSRR was promised $500,000.00 NEW money from the Legislative Budget Board to restart Palestine trains, but that money never came. Instead, the Parks Dept is having to shuffle money around within it's own department, and borrow $250,000.00 from the TSRR's 2007 budget in order to run the Palestine trains. This is a deplorable way to run our state parks. We have been told that the train will become a "static display" after this year, shutting down our historic railroad, and laying off most of the staff. We cannot allow this to happen. The TSRR is vital to our economy and is the major tourist atraction in East Texas. We cannot allow our vintage rail cars to sit and rust from neglect.
Chris Bell's position
AUSTIN — A reduction in parks funding under the tenure of Gov. Rick Perry — and the possibility of more cuts and the shutdown of 18 parks — is drawing fire from his three opponents in the governor’s race.
Democrat Chris Bell said he will go on the road in the coming weeks to call attention to what he called the “decay” of the 600,000-acre state system under Perry. He supports expected legislation that would inject an additional $50 million into parks.
