Ruminations of the Easily Amused for 3/2/2015

Had a fantastic weekend! Didn't really do much for days since it was such bad weather. Didn't want to go out anywhere, felt like binge watching some teevee shows, including "Chuck". Hub and I have watched the ENTIRE FIVE SEASONS and I'm really sorry it's over Supposed to be bad weather the rest of the week, GREAT for the upcoming bluebonnets!

I'm really sorry to hear that Angie Bush is no longer working for the City of Glen Rose as city secretary. SHE WAS GREAT!!!!! Darla told me this morning that a position fortuituously was available in Venus, which is much closer to Bush's home, and Venus is now lucky to have her. I believe she was one of the most intelligent and professional people in government, and I hope whoever applies can even get close to how she was (and is).

Because, can you ever get too many Mentos videos?

As dlisted says

So a YouTuber in Japan decided to find out what would happen if he covered his body in Mentos and then jumped into a tub full of Coke Zero. SPOILER ALERT: You may be disappointed, because dude doesn’t shoot through the roof and end up in the Pacific Ocean. He kind of just sits there in a foamy Coke bath, which looks like Mama June’s idea of a hot tub.

And, speaking of Mentos commercials

You may have read the articles about how hackers have gotten to the hardware on your computer, including the firmware. One article I read said that malicious code was being put in sectors marked bad. Interesting article on Boing Boing about 3 things to expend information security to embedded software. I worked a long time back for a company that did Roms and Proms for Tandy 100's, etc (remember those? Hah!)

We have given up control of our computing. We are trusting too many different devices—devices we have no reason to trust given that they could be compromised without our knowledge. The time has come to take back control of our computing devices and our security. We must put pressure on hardware companies to ensure that their products are trustworthy, even (and especially) after they leave the factory floor. We must act now to ensure a future where the foundation of computing is secure.

Weirdly common concurrence of genius ideas.

Inventors’ ideas are influenced and midwifed by the state of technology around them, the conversational topics in society, and the maturity of other science and artisanship they’re building on. Since inventors are embedded in the same environment with each other — particularly if they’re in the same social and educational class — it increases the chance they’ll turn their minds to similar problems

LOVE this commercial

And also LOVE Jeff Goldblum, he's so hilarious!

Ebola nurse suing Presbyterian

What the infections of Nina Pham and Amber Vinson tell us -- and what's at the heart of Pham's lawsuit -- is that nobody at Presbyterian Hospital knew how Ebola is transmitted because nobody else knew. And yet loud public pronouncements to the contrary were made repeatedly.

Those pronouncements can be viewed as having legitimate political and social aims. We do know that Ebola is hard to get, not easy. We saw the ugly leading edge of public panic -- the dark place where panic can lead us -- in the stigmatizing of West African immigrants.

But as this lawsuit forces us to recognize, there also are real human costs in over-selling safety. The personal safety of Pham and Vinson obviously took a back seat to what leaders thought was the interest of public safety.

The point is that nobody's safety is served by lying. The clear impression promulgated by the CDC and by political leaders here was that we knew everything there was to know about Ebola transmission and that we had nothing to worry about. That was a lie. We don't know. And we do have things to fear.

Pham says she was essentially assigned to Duncan and that she did not, as THR claimed, volunteer to care for him. Having no previous experience dealing with a highly infectious disease like Ebola, Pham asked a supervisor for guidance in how to protect herself from contamination. The supervisor, according to Pham, printed information from Google and gave it to her. As she began to treat Duncan, she left her hair and neck uncovered.

Eventually, Pham and other nurses treating Duncan would develop their own protection protocol, even improvising a protected respirator. Pham claims she would've been better off treating Duncan in Liberia.
