Gov.-elect Greg Abbott Wastes No Time in Conning the Masses

So, what sort of man is our new Governor?

in the Austin American-Statesman.

Gov-elect Greg Abbott talks a good game, but he is like so many Conservatives when it comes to picking and choosing what rights they want to defend and when they want to defend them.

As soon as the oil companies are permitted to and want to take our lands for mineral and oil rights, or when a city, county or the state wants to take our land to build through a new toll road, Abbott and legislators will work against Texas homeowners and their property rights and/or will not pay top dollar to take that property from us.

I'm all for government staying out of our lives, but right now Democrats AND Republicans at state, county and city levels tell us what to do and they determine what rights we can keep and what rights they will remove for their own gain.

Confucius tells us to "Beware of the man who blows hot and cold with one breath."

Greg Abbott is such a man.

What is truly bizarre about this to me how much this is like federal government vs states rights but at a states level. Does Denton no longer get to put in a fracking ban that their local govt voted for?

The issue Abbott raises would seem to pit two conservative values against one another — unfettered property rights versus local control free of state interference.

I thought Republicans were for small government butting out of other's lives.

Well, that's basically what I was talking about...

from above:

"I'm all for government staying out of our lives, but right now Democrats AND Republicans at state, county and city levels tell us what to do and they determine what rights we can keep and what rights they will remove for their own gain."

Republicans ARE for small government except when they want something badly enough [for themselves or their special interests] and will then force it on everyone.

I haven't looked, but wonder if Denton government (wasn't it the City that did the fracking ban) has said about this.

The only good thing is that, given how heavy handed Abbott is, there shoudl be a rubber band factor snapping back the other way at some point when people get tired of that jackass.

I wouldn't bet the farm on it.  The majority voted for Abbott after voting for Abbott a decade for Attorney General, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

Abbott still has an agenda that is in sych with the majority of Texans.  He has the "kick ass" mentality that so many Texans can identify with.  As much as he is "over the top" on many issues, that reflects the majority view in this state.

FYI...  This actually is a pretty good article presenting several different viewpoints.  Greg Abbott thinks he is going to push the concept that the state has jurisdiction on fracking over cities, counties and towns, but the provision below could block his efforts, or at least make it tougher for him.

However, that said, big oil and gas have contributed big bucks to Supreme Court Judges, and there is no doubt in my mind that the fracking issue will go up to the Supreme Court and Denton's authority over fracking... and those of other small entities, may be overturned.

Dissecting Denton:  How a Texas city banned fracking

Texas Law states, ” Local governments have the right to impose reasonable health and safety restrictions, and the Legislature has granted most Texas cities, including Denton, the power to “regulate exploration and development of mineral interests.”
