Chet Edwards Votes with the Republicans for Big Oil and Gas Rights in Oman... and Sweatshops

21 July 2006 at 10:06:15 AM

OFTA- Oman Free Trade Agreement. You know-the one that will give companies like, say, Exxon-Mobil the right to drill in Oman and allow Oman to OPERATE OUR DOMESTIC PORTS (hello! Dubai Ports! Which is STILL apparently not sold but STILL belongs to Dubai World). And I guess Ole Chet is for sweatshop labor without protections for foreign labor. Tell me again he's a Democrat. Convince me, please.

Plus, the deal would establish the right for clothes made in Oman to be imported into the United States duty-free — except that there are very few people in Oman willing to work in sweatshops, so the Omani Sultan will allow foreign clothing makers to "import" people from Bangladesh and other poor countries to do that work.

Do you think OFTA — by allowing U.S. corporations to take over Omani natural resources or by allowing Chinese investors to set up sweatshop factories in Oman where indentured Pakistani "guest workers" would toil for slave wages so they can get duty-free U.S. access for clothing imports — will improve the U.S. image? This scenario is likely to send just the wrong impression and perhaps generate greater hostility towards us.

I see sometimes where some supposedly left-leaning blogs call for coughing up money for his campaign. Well, how about HE coughs up some votes that aren't hugging up to Bush, Corporate interests, the War, or Oil and Gas?
