Ruminations of the Easily Amused for Sep 9 2014

I love this time of year. Weather is cooler in the early morning and I hear, at Fossil Rim, the red deer making their rutting sounds. I hope to see at least one more round of crape myrtle bloomings. Hub and I have some outside work to do, including scooping out the pond- over 10 years of ducks, geese, and erosion have put in a foot or more of sludge. Can't wait for that to be done, since then will be able to see the ducks diving under water and skittering across the pond. Don't know if it's too late to do winter gardening, but this year I'm going to try it in tubs with some fence around the tubs to keep deer away. I've never done winter gardening, ever, but some friends have done it with great success for winter squash. Also back working on my dog area in the house. I did a chain link fence last year with some cedar panels around it last year about this time. I also had made a cover with PVC pipe to keep the dogs cool, the rain off and stop the wind. WELL, THAT worked great UNTIL we had that big snowstorm last year- the snow crashed it! hah! I then made a second smaller panel that I put up on blocks just to block the wind. My plans are to make a sort of arbor with the smaller panel attached on one side (for wind block), put some wisteria vine over the top (for shade), and then, after that's on, repurpose the PVC pipe to make a smaller cover that would attach or rest on the wooden arbor, with a waterproof tarp over it. Now, the dogs DO have igloo houses so the rain stays off them anyway, but I like the idea of having an area where they can get out of the dog house and walk around a bit. (This besides a very large dog run area hub made years ago where the dogs most of the time spend the day-that area is fenced in, has lots of trees and bushes and a dog house-you might say we pamper our dogs:) One of my dogs is really picky about walking on wet surfaces. When I start bulding this, which ought to be this week, I'm going to do a separate post with pics showing before and after. My dad was a really handy guy, I took woodworking in high school, and when he passed away about 5 years ago now, I'm the one that inherited his tools, including woodworking equipment, so I'm pretty excited about this year doing even more to create things, including a dollhouse kit I got several years ago. I take inspiration there from my mom, who has built a couple of really wonderful dollhouses herself over the years.
