Texas Governor Rick Perry Indicted!!!

16 August 2014 at 12:29:14 PM

Couldn't happen to a nicer monster.  LOL

Texas Governor Rick Perry has been indicted by a Travis County Grand Jury re: 1 count abuse of power and 1 count coercion

It's about time Perry had to answer for some of his actions.

For the past 14 years Perry has been so protected by the Texas GOP machine.  No one could or would touch him.

Reminds me of how the Feds finally caught Al Capone.  They couldn't get him for all his crimes and murders, but they were able to do an "end around" and send him to prison for not paying his taxes.

Even if Perry escapes being imprisoned, the rest of his 6-month term of governor will be defending himself on the charges.  It also gives Perry a lot of unwanted national publicity.

YEAH. OF COURSE it looks like he's guilty or at least the grand jury thought there was enough evidence to bring it forth for a trial, despite Po Po Chicken Pot Pie Perry saying that it was political. Gee, here's a doofus who is being AUDITED for a CANCER SLUSH FUND, coming out of his Texas Enterprise Fund, which is KNOWN for cronyism and abuse,  going to his cronies without oversight, he sees an opportunity to abuse the powers of his office to cut funding FOR the office that was investigating him. ONly people who love crooks can not cheer Rick Perry getting what he deserves.

The Texas state auditor's office would not comment toMother Jones on whether or not the fund has enough oversight. However, when it audited Perry's other pet corporate grant program, the $200 million Texas Emerging Technology Fund (which at the time, required the same unanimous approval by Perry and Co. as the Enterprise fund) in 2011, the state auditor found that this fund had no consistent process for awarding grants, did not stop advisory board members (who were appointed by Perry) from accepting compensation from grant recipients, didn't record its meetings, and did not submit the majority of its required annual reports between 2007 and 2009. Another fund, the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, which was spearheaded by Perry and Lance Armstrong, saw eight cancer scientists (two of them Nobel laureates) resign in protest because it was putting political and commercial interests over scientific ones.

"Perry's office is basically accommodating a process by which taxpayer money is transferred to corporations, not invested in state infrastructure," says Matt Angle

So, hah, Po Old Rick did a *THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS* press conference, which of course anyone should expect because DAMN, this indictment came right in the middle of his running for pres.. again. Had to laugh at this.

"We don't settle political differences with indictments in this country," Perry said. "It is outrageous that someone would use political theatrics to rip away at the very fabric of our state's constitution."

National Guard on border anyone?

“Even in his visit to the National Guard Training Center today, he did not specify metrics, timetables, training or even provide a clearly defined mission for our soldiers who are being deployed to respond to the thousands of children arriving in our state fleeing drug cartel and gang violence in Central America,” U.S. Rep. Joaquín Castro, D-San Antonio, said Wednesday. “This appears to be a feel-good show of force without clear purpose.”

Besides, um, it was a GRAND JURY that decided this, part of our LEGAL system. Boo-hoo, maybe Perry would have liked to strongarm those jury people to let him off the hook. This is, let's not forget about the Texas Enteprise Fund and  CPRIT

The Public Integrity Unit might be the most important office in state government run by a Democrat. Gov. Perry has been in office for 14 years—every nook and cranny of state government is filled with his appointees. The Public Integrity Unit is the rare piece that he doesn’t control. In 2005, the work of the Public Integrity Unit led to the indictment of former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay. So naturally, for years, Republicans in the state have tried to strip that power from the Travis County DA and fold it into Attorney General Greg Abbott’s office.

What’s more, the Public Integrity Unit was in the process of conducting an investigation of the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas. CPRIT received a ton of money from the Legislature to award grants to high-level medical research projects. The problem: a lot of that money was going to people who shouldn’t have gotten it. And some of those folks had close ties to Perry. Just a few months ago, Lehmberg’s office indicted CPRIT’s former director over his allegedly improper disbursement of an $11 million grant. But when Lehmberg got pulled over with the potato juice in her car last spring, the investigation was just underway.

When Lehmberg’s DWI went public, Republicans saw a way to get rid of a pesky, entrenched foe. (Though they couched this in terms of their deep, abiding concern for the office’s integrity.) Meanwhile, Democrats who would have happily seen Lehmberg canned if the Travis County Commissioners Court could have appointed her replacement rallied around Lehmberg as if she was the last warrior for righteousness on Earth.

But what did Perry do, exactly?

He threatened, publicly, to use his line item-veto power to zero out the Public Integrity Unit’s budget. Since that part of the Travis DA’s office played a statewide role, it was funded by the state. This kind of threat isn’t unusual. Executives use veto threats all the time to get what they want. The difference this time was that Perry had the audacity to do it all publicly. It’s unusual for an elected official to bully another elected official into resigning. And when threats didn’t work, he followed through on it. At the end of last year’s legislative session, Perry eliminated the entirety of the Public Integrity Unit’s funding–some $8 million over two years. Money that was going to investigate, in small part, his own party’s mismanagement of state government agencies, including alleged corruption in CPRIT.

That seems pretty slimy.

It does. The Travis County Commissioners Court pitched in to restore about half of the Public Integrity Unit’s annual budget, which allowed the unit to continue operating at a reduced pace and continue the CPRIT investigation. Residents of the Austin metropolitan area remain very grateful that money didn’t go to road maintenance or a library or whatever.

This one made me laugh.  Sarah Palin felt she had to protect and defend Rick Perry in her mind-bending column for FOX News:

Adding another thing about Perry's supposed moral outrage over the DUI. Terri Hall points out that he wasn't so morally outraged when it was Mike Krusee with the DUI.

When examining Perry’s response to another highly visible lawmaker’s arrest for drunk driving in 2008, the facts show that perhaps his veto threat directed at Lehmberg may very well be political and an abuse of power after all. Republican State Rep. Mike Krusee was also arrested for a DUI in April 2008.

Like Lehmberg’s incident, the DPS trooper caught Krusee’s drunkeness on videotape, which shows him failing the field sobriety test three times. His license was suspended for 180 days. The charges were later dismissed, arguably due to his connections. Krusee’s lawyer claimed he failed the test due to ‘the wind.’ Really? It was ‘the wind,’ three times in a row? Krusee quietly resigned from office, and then made boatloads of cash lobbying his former colleagues for mounds of pro-toll, anti-taxpayer legislation. All of which Governor Perry happily signed into law. Indeed, Krusee was Perry’s reliable pro-toll, go-to henchman that ended up alienating Krusee with his colleagues to such a degree that he lost all influence.

Hypocrite, thy name is Oops Perry

I had written several articles on the DUI issue with Mike Krusee who was the worm that manipulated toll roads through the Legislature.  There also was a DUI issue with Senator Gonzalo Barrientos and no one pushed for him to step down either.  There have been others where the information has been very hush-hush.

Perry did this no doubt because it was the Office of the Travis County DA (ultra Democrats region) and thought he was being slick.  Once a bully, always a bully.

Honestly, I think all these people should have stepped down, but hell... what do I know?  "Politics makes for strange bedfellows."
