Ruminations of the Easily Amused- FIFA World Cup 2014

We've been hunkered down the last week watching FIFA futbol. LOVE the games. We gave up cable/sat some years back but have been able to watch all the games (so far) on Univision. (And that means I have google translate open to understand some of the words since Univision is a spanish-language channel). I like the beauty and skill of futbol (or soccer as we call it here in the US), the fact that the game is not interrupted at all by commercials but gets a bunch in the halftime or between games, thus not changing the flow of the game, and that, while the teams sing their respective national anthems at the beginning of the game, there are not overt political or military overtones. I also love feeling like part of one big world where the love of a game brings us all together regardless of where we came from. And I especially like "Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooalllllllll"

Here's commentary also from What Would Jack Do?

I love the World Cup. I love that every four years, people from all over the world focus passionately on one thing: soccer. I love that, for a month or so, the world seems a better, safer, and more joyful place to be. 22 guys and a little white ball will do that.

US vs Portugal this afternoon.

Portugal lost their opening match to Germany 4-0 and another loss will mean elimination from the World Cup. The Americans, however, won their opening game and can secure a spot in the second round with another victory.

Favorite game so far-France vs Switzerland

And who knew? I was wondering, what the fool country is Allemande? Turns out that we may be the only country to call Allemande "Germany".

P.S. Started to watch ABC today to see the games in English. Looks like they were actually using ESPN for the sports. ESPN people kept on whining about how hot it was in Brazil, over and over and over. But what made me change back to Univision is that when, in the Korea vs Algeria match, at the first goal, the ESPN commentator did now say "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaLLLL". Now I don't know if that's something all commentators do or only Univision but it's part of the fun for me. So I changed it back to Univision. Only going to change IF that's the only way to watch the playoffs. UPDATED. Found that, in fact, ESPN didn't do their own feed but used the FIFA feed AND right, they don't do the GOAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLL

Now for an enormous qualification: ESPN isn't producing the video for the matches. That is coming from the FIFA world feed. So it's hard to call this the greatest production from ESPN when they aren't actually handling the video of the matches. That said, the fact that they aren't in control of the actual game telecast can make it harder on the broadcasters and directors....

Tyler lets the game breathe. He allows the crowd to tell much of the story. Americans will never get used to his style of goal call – just allowing the visual of the play to develop and rather calmly announcing the score – as over-the-top goal calls have been ingrained in our sports consciousness to a near Pavlovian level. Understated is not what we do, which is why some Americans tuned in to Univision for the match between Mexico and South Africa (more on that later). Univision's call, compared to Tyler's understated style, was a 90-minute party. That's just never going to be Tyler's style.

AND that's why I flipped away from ABC to Univision
