Why Does Anyone Besides a Tea Party John Bircher Have Ronald Reagan on a Pedestal?

When Ronald Reagan died and had that awful circus of multiple funerals, I remember wondering why anyone was treating him as a some sort of demi-god that required this sort of tasteless excess. I just finished reading "Nancy Reagan" by Kitty Kelly which definitely both opened my eyes about what grifters the Reagans were as well as reinforced some ideas I already had about Ronald Reagan.  Here was a woman that for all intents and purposes actually ran the life of her weak husband. She also was a huge hypocrite in that, despite all her moralizing about her own children, she was 2 months pregnant when she married Reagan.

Besides ordering expensive china for the White house, she also ordered a special set for herself with "Nancy" as a hand painted monogram "with 24 karat gold double-banded teacups monogrammed NDR. No two plates were alike and each piece carried the presidential seal plus the inscription at the bottom "Designed for the First Lady of the United States of America, Mrs. Ronald W Reagan.... Unfortunately for her, the First Lady announced the acquisition of her $209,508 state china on the same day the President cut school lunches and declared that ketchup would be counted as a vegetable in the federally subsidized programs".

Reminded through reading this book how reactionary and far right Ronald Reagan actually was. Oh, I knew about the Iran Contra affair, where he bypassed Congress to covertly sell weapons to Iran. I also knew that he was one of the McCarthy stooges and that he busted the airline controller strike

Anyway, enough with the myth. Unless you're a Republican that needs to have a more recent fake saint to worship.
