Ruminations of the Easily Amused for Nov 12 2013

12 November 2013 at 1:53:51 PM

Supposed to be really cold tonight with a brisk wind coming in from the north. I have a cedar panel I'm going to put together today around where the dog houses are to cut the wind. Will take a photo when I get done. This is also the time of year to trim oak trees (supposedly will prevent oak wilt or beetle infestations). Have been trimming trees in the yard and it looks pretty spiffy. Next project will be to make a gate going onto the porch. I've seen some beautiful, well -done ones recently by some Somervell County residents that are easy to open but have the effect of creating a nice gated porch area. Might start doing that after Thanksgiving.

Incidentally, was told today that a private enterprise known for involvement with children in Somervell County not only pays cheap but tells the employees that they should apply for food stamps and WIC. Hmmm, let's put this another way. Instead of the company paying a LIVING WAGE, their employees should become the welfare recipients that some people gripe about.

If Hillary Clinton runs, I will vote for her. I am also going to vote, in Texas, for Wendy Davis.

Here's a real jerk move from Greg Abbott re: watering his lawn via Bay Area Houston

Just remember, last week we voted to raid the Rainy Day Fund of $2Billion to address the drought situation and secure our water supply. While the citizens of Texas was reaching into their own pockets to do what is responsible for Texas water supply future, Abbott is using  that same supply to water his grass. He is not trying to save his livelihood, or his cattle or his crops. He is just keeping up with his rich buddies and keeping his grass green.

Cool! Panoramic Ball Cam

What the fool is WRONG with a company staying CLOSED on  a holiday, or even half a day, letting the employees ENJOY, say, THANKSGIVING? Walmart decides to start their shopping DURING Thanksgiving dinner. Ugh.

Last year, Walmart faced protests and strikes for creeping into holiday hours. The 8 p.m. start time prompted an online petition that collected more than 30,000 signatures. As consolation, the retailer said it will pay workers higher holiday wages, give them one 25 percent discount on a transaction, and give them a free meal.

What Walmart did not explain in its announcement is that 1 million workers have little choice but to work. Retailers have insisted they will afford time off to any worker who want to spend time with their families. However, far from being “excited” to work the holiday rush, it’s more likely managers have flatly told staff they cannot request the time off. The Huffington Post has reported on several signs popping up in Kmart stores that tell employees to not even bother requesting time off. (Kmart replied those were “rogue” signs.)
