Good News on Wendy David polling (Texas Tribune via Brains and Eggs)

Attorney General Greg Abbott, the leading candidate for the Republican nomination for Texas governor, holds a single-digit lead over the likely Democratic nominee, state Sen. Wendy Davis of Fort Worth, according to the latest University of Texas/Texas Tribune Poll.

[...]

“What you’ve got is a race in which, for the first time in a long time, the Democrat is as well-known as the Republican at the outset of the race,” said poll co-director Daron Shaw, a professor of government at the University of Texas at Austin.

Burka Blog on Greg Abbott

It is clear from his "Working Plan for Texans" that Greg Abbott is going to run for governor as a tea party candidate all the way. His call for stronger fiscal reforms in a state that has a long history of low taxation and low spending would have an adverse impact upon the state's economy. This is what happens when a candidate for governor who has little knowledge of state government announces his intention to rachet down spending to minimalist levels. Abbott's ideas will have the effect of constricting the state's economy rather than expanding it. He says next-to-nothing about public education, for example, nor does he address health care; in other words, he ignores the two biggest and costliest areas of state services. The only solace one can take in Abbott's vision for the future of the state is that it resolves the question of whether he would be better or worse than Rick Perry. Astonishing as it may seem, I think he is worse than Perry.

The question must be asked: Is Abbott's vision what Texans want for their government -- or their families? Is this really a state whose leaders have no interest in improving the lives of its citizens? Is Texas really going the way of Arkansas and other backward states where all that matters is guns? I do not believe that Greg Abbott's vision for Texas is the vision shared by most Texans, but that's why we have elections and horse races.

Obamacare will be a boon for millions of people

Under the new LifeWise plan, Donna would have to pay more than $1,000 a month, a nearly $300 per month increase and a huge hit for a family with an income around $40,000. It was bare-bones coverage by ACA standards, with a $6,350 deductible.

....Fast forward a month, and Donna was able to log onto Washington's marketplace and shop for insurance. And what did she find? Options. A LifeWise plan with the same deductible they offered her outside the exchange was a little cheaper. Plans with a lower deductible had the same or lower premiums as the LifeWise plan. What she ended up buying was a plan through Community Health Plan of Washington with a $250 deductible.

And crucially, she also discovered she would qualify for a federal tax subsidy that would knock her monthly premium to $80. Her daughter could enroll in Medicaid, at no cost to the family.

So here's the bottom line: If Donna had taken the default option that LifeWise offered outside of the marketplace, she would have paid nearly $1,000 more per month for a worse plan than she was able to obtain on the marketplace.

The real reason that cancer patient writing in the WSJ lost her insurance

THIS is why we need Obamacare-for pre-existing conditions that insurance companies would not cover, and for those who can't afford health insurance.

So, to those Republicans protesting Obamacare: You’re right that there are appalling problems with the website, but they will be fixed. Likewise, you’re right that President Obama misled voters when he said that everyone could keep their insurance plan because that’s now manifestly not true (although they will be able to get new and better plans, sometimes for less money).

But how about showing empathy also for a far larger and more desperate group: The nearly 50 million Americans without insurance who play health care Russian roulette as a result. FamiliesUSA, a health care advocacy group that supports Obamacare, estimated last year that an American dies every 20 minutes for lack of insurance.

It has been a year since my college roommate, Scott Androes, died of prostate cancer, in part because he didn’t have insurance and thus didn’t see a doctor promptly. Scott fully acknowledged that he had made a terrible mistake in economizing on insurance, but, in a civilized country, is this a mistake that people should die from?

“Website problems are a nuisance,” Dr. Gibson said. “Life and death is when you need care and can’t afford to get it.”

The real story behind the phony cancelled insurance scandal

The plans being canceled are ending because they offered insufficient coverage—and only a few years ago both Rs and Ds were upset about these kinds of plans. But there's been collective amnesia about the shoddy plans that GOPers have happily exploited in recent days. Perhaps Obama should have said, "Those of you who obtain insurance on the individual market can keep your plans unless it’s the sort of rip-off plan the ACA will forbid. Otherwise, you will be offered new options that actually give you decent coverage at a decent price."

The problem is that Sen.Wendy Davis will scare off a lot of conservative [not only Tea Partiers] Texas voters with her pro-Abortion stance. Also, I question the poll as being an accurate gauge of conservative as well as liberal voters.  Don't get me wrong, I think that AG Greg Abbott would be the worst selection for the majority of Texans.  He borders on the lunatic fringe of Tea Party-ism that continues to apply extremist ultra right-wing nut politics and views... much of which Texas certainly needs to live without.  It will be an interesting race.  It will be a very tough choice for mainstream conservatives as it seems to be liberal vs. Tea Party candidates... extreme opposites for them.

you're correct, of course. Nonetheless, I'm voting for Davis, and will work to help her get elected. If she doesn't, it won't be because a whole lot of people don't want her to be. I can't vote for Greg Abbott.

re: Obamacare costs:

I just received a notification that the premium for the individual health plan I have had for my 16-year old son since he was born is increasing $12 per month, or 4.56 percent "due to" 2 New Affordable Care Act Fees.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas [the largest insurer in TX] states that the increase is because of fees termed "Annual Fee on Health Insurers" and the "Transitional Reinsurance Program Contrribution Fee"

So, the premium will be adjusted for these fees.

Interestingly, the deductible remains the same at $250 per year, while most new plans under the ACA increase to between $3,000 to $6,000 per year depending on the plan selected.  The reason his plan has such a low deductible is because he is "grandfathered" in since he has  had the plan for so many years.

Premiums for plans bounce around depending on several factors, including amount of deductibles, copays, and whether it's a HMO or PPO, etc.

So, Obamacare is supposed to be more affordable but the reality is that people will not be able to afford all the out of pocket expenses and I guarantee that many more people will be in debt due to health issues and there may be more bankruptcies declared as well when people can't pay for hospital stays and other out of pocket costs.

It is a tragedy waiting to happen.
