Identify Theft Story

Got a couple of telephone calls from two different vendors this weekend. In both cases, a customer service person asked for additional information to confirm an order. When I looked at the caller Id, i didn't recognize who it was. Hub was concerned that maybe it was a scammer actually calling the house in order to get additional information to use a credit card. So I looked up the actual phone number of both comparnies and called them directly to tell them I had not ordered anything from either company. Found out from company #1 that someone had gotten my card number, ordered a watch and wanted it shipped to CA. Pretty much the same thing for the second company, too, also a watch. Must be something easy to resell? Anyway, I suspect that my credit card number might have become available as a results of one of the many hackers that I've read about in the last year getting info from various corporations. I have a new credit card and number, and from now on, I will never save my credit card with my information on any internet website. I don't plan to stop ordering stuff online because it's such a great way to find and get easily exactly what I want.

I had an issue a year or so ago.  I found it reviewing one of my monthly card statements and discovered a charge I did not make.

Apparently, it was billed to a company that provides people's information.  The scam is to use another person's info to buy and gain access to several other people's info and then to commit identity fraud.

I contacted the info company to remove the charge and then contacted the credit company to report the issue.  Being that my card was compromised, I received a new credit card number.

This sort of identity theft happens a lot.  Scammers have gotten very clever over the years.

The scam that really got to me is that there is a device being used by scammers that scans your credit card when you use it in a store to make a purchase.  It is a small electronic card reader that wirelessly gains access to your credit card and magnetic tape info.  The scammers can then use the info via Internet or phone to make purchased using your card info.

I recommend that people be very careful and be aware of what is going on around you.  Plus, I advise people need to consistently review their monthly statements for any purchases they did NOT make and then to contact the card company to remove the charge.  Identity theft is happening more often and in more creative ways.

Yes! I spoke to someone in the fraud depart at one of the 2 stores. She told me 2 fraud stories. One was a woman who worked in fast food that was, when a customer gave the credit card, ALSO swiping in into her own card reader and then selling the info once filled up. The second story had to do with RFID chips on credit cards and being scanned by a reader.

I also asked her about one of my favorite "pat you on the head to make you feel more secure" techniques and that is with the 3-4 digit code that cards have. It would make much more sense to have a code that changed every day, otherwise, it's subject to the same type of theft that the REST of the numbers are.
