Heard a Ridiculous Argument Against Dissolving the Hospital District today- Cost of Changing Info

Heard that someone is running around telling people that it will cost some money to transfer over the district stuff back to the county. This is apparently as a reason to discourage people from wanting to dissolve it. The answer to that is So?

1. Gee. the hospital district is going to have to do that now and has apparently is still not finished. Wouldn't it be MORE responsible to ask the district to WAIT to see what happens with the petition since it's pretty clear the petition has quite a lot of signatures and continues to get signed onto? I mean, if the idea is to save money, then the prudent thing would be for the district to hold off a little longer-after all, seems to me they are holding off setting the tax rate and that doesn't seem to be bothering them.

2. To add to what was said, if the cost of transferring stuff was a consideration, why weren't people boohooing about this as a reason not to shift over from the hospital authority?

3. Didn't see those same people griping about the money going from taxpayers to the hospital before. Where were these Fiscal Conservatives, when they decided, without a required legal IRS hearing, to put Somervell County taxpayers on the hook for 14.4 million bucks (plus interest), loaning money to a PRIVATE hospital? I didn't hear them whining about all the times the hospital came to get some extra money beyond what was budgeted, and in fact, the county went out of its way to help them hide their hat-in-hand pleadings.

4. If these Fiscal Conservatives are truly concerned about some extra money going out, I sure hope they are pushing for the person who embezzled money from the hospital to not only pay it back, but be prosecuted, and look into who was that person's boss or bosses to see how it is they missed that. Let's say that the county is willing to turn a blind eye to all that money missing. Fine, but then don't be a hypocrite about the cost of transferring ownership.

Seems to me the people that pushed the hospital district have done quite enough. They attempted to scare people into believing the hospital was going to be closed, even though that was not only not true, but ALL of the county commissioners said it would not be. They didn't do their due diligence to find out if there were other ways to streamline costs or pursue other ways to work within their budget. They told some people, apparently, that the hospital district wasn't going to have any debt (not true, plus don't forget it's not only the 14.4 mil certificate but the $50,000 loan they took out.) They are spending taxpayer money even now in Pecan Plantation which is in a different hospital district and is patently illegal-the only reason they are getting away with it now is that they are apparently waiting for someone to file a lawsuit (too bad the people on the board don't have both a sense of decency and also desire to follow the law). That is, of course, the surprise to people who found out that their taxes went up. One person who signed the petition said she even had written a letter to the editor touting the district but then saw her tax bill.

1. You're complaining that the District is still not finished, but then wondering why it isn't waiting to see if the petition eliminates it before it debuts. You can't have it both ways, salon. Maybe it is waiting or maybe making the transition is not as instantaneous as some people in the County said it would be.

2. Who knows if the cost of this transition is worth it or not. I guess that depends on what side of the argument one is on.

3. The required IRS hearing? You've alluded to this before but I guess I missed your specifics on this requirement. Please educate me.

Also, GRMC was private until it was sold to Harris (sorry, I don't remember the year). In 1993 it was purchased from Harris by the county and remains a county-owned facility. It's not a private hospital.

4. The missing money: I can't speak to this.

Also, anyone with any sense should know that the hospital's debt is not going to disappear just because a Hospital District is formed.

And the commissioners can only communicate what their intentions are for the hospital; they don't have a crystal ball and cannot, reliably, predict what the future of our hospital might actually be under any circumstances.

Is the future of the hospital at risk? Of course it is. Is it engaging in illegal activity by operating its facility in Pecan Plantation? That's your opinion.

I'm a Fiscal Conservative who did not support the Amphitheater, the Expo, the golf courses or that ridiculous conglomeration of  high-maintanence architecture at the high school. I am, however, one who happens to support the formation of the Hospital District because I believe that the hospital is a priority for our community and that this district will bring more transparency and accountability into how our tax dollars are spent on our investment.

No, I'm not complaining that the district is not finished. I'm saying it is ridiculous for all the reasons mentioned for one of the unelected board members to try to use spending money as a reason to not dissolve the hospital district. I'm with you about all the other items such as the Amphitheatre, golf course, and the stadium monstrosity.

The good news about all this is I believe, based on how eager people are to sign the petition, that the board baloney is not going over well.

@ HB:  Actually, you CAN "have it both ways" because you can be a disatisfied citizen and fight the district even WHILE the petition is being signed.

After all, what if there aren't enough signatures and the petition fails?  Then you've lost valuable time in contacting district leaders and in alerting them to your points in the hopes that someone will listen and hear why this Hospital District is a very bad idea.

So, legally, you may do both.

I wasn't referring to legalities, pstern.

It only makes sense that the transition to form the Hospital District should proceed and I assume that's what is happening.
