Where is the real David Dewhurst hiding?

27 June 2013 at 9:01:28 PM

Dewhurst used to be such a nice, quiet gentleman when he first became Lt. Gov. In fact, he cared about the people in this state and even stood up a little to Rick Perry and then Speaker Tom Craddick who were dictatorial in their leadership approach. The 2 men verbally spanked him for voicing his disagreement with their policies and leadership approaches. Dewhurst was more of a democratic leader businessman, who freed up the Senate and delegated responsibility to do the job they were supposed to do.

This is a different Dewhurst, who now appears maniacal in his public blasts of outrage. He needs to go the way of the Wooly Mammoth. Both he and Perry are outmoded and antique dinosaurs and Texans deserve better leadership. Maybe 2014 is the time to get rid of the inept leadership and vote in a Gov. and Lt. Gov. much more worthy than these 2 vermin.

One thing I am really glad about. There were a lOT of people, in Texas, nationally, and all over the world, who saw David Dewhurst on the day about SB5. We all saw how arbitrarily he went to stop Davis, bent or broke the rules, and most importantly, somebody (was it Dewhurst?) ordered the website people to change the vote date.

Speak just about leadership:

Dewhurst clearly is NOT the leader he should be. He should have taken better control of the Senate proceedings instead of just standing there with his hands playing in his pockets.

If he had been a good leader, the vote would have been taken earlier and the bill would be on Perry's desk waiting to be signed.

Defining moment was filibuster.  From this point on, Texas will not tolerate elected officials that do not listen or adequately represent constituents.

With all of you. i've heard for years that the key in any election is to get out the vote. After what happened with the hospital district election and with this debacle in Texas Lege, it is more true than ever.

I'm afraid the bill will be approved in this Special Legislative Session.  The Senate and House still are GOP majority.  It will be signed by Perry.  I'm also certain many pro-choice individuals and groups will take it through the court system up to and including the State Supreme Court, but GOP judges will not overturn the bill.

Agree, pstern, at least on the first part. What, though, Perry and Dewhurst haven't reckoned with is their s**tsotrm they're causing with women. Makes all Republicans look bad. At least, aside for Strauss, I haven't heard any other R's denounce what Perry is doing. Have to say, I liked this.

There are many good guys named "Rick" and "Perry" but in politics say "Oops," and everyone knows with laughter to whom we refer.

Since Perry has now launched his strange attack on the University of Texas Longhorn, interrupting his attacks against pay equity for women, and after his attacks on education for Texas schoolchildren, let's look at the first returns of the campaign for Texas governor in football terms: Wendy scored first with her filibuster that electrified political observers as well as women. Wendy 7, Perry 0.

Then Perry panicked and launched a bizarre personal attack on Wendy and even brought into his attack Wendy's mom. This was another Perry "oops" moment. Wendy's reaction was calm, professional, factual and politically on-point. Wendy 14, Oops 0, after three minutes in the first quarter.

Understand this. It is not certain Perry runs for reelection and we may know momentarily whether he does. But he sure looks scared by Wendy, doesn't he? Perry's frenzied low-road reaction only helped Wendy, mobilized her supporters, drew great interest from major potential donors who know great talent (Wendy) and great panic (Perry) when they see it, and added more names to the "Draft Wendy" movement that has now begun.

Of course the bill will be approved. But Texas is changing and that's what this is all about. There's no going back now.

Dewhurst, Perry and their ilk will not be able to stop it, no matter how hard they try, not in the long run.

What this is about is that those running the GOP are extremists who are out of touch with mainstream Texans.  On the national level, the same types are extreme to the majority of Americans.

Here in red Texas, the extremists may have the money to win but they are dangerous to our way of life.

There are many in the Republican Party who are more centrists and/or real conservatists opposing the extremist politics, but they do not have clout and are not popular with mainstream Texans... yet.

The pro-life / abortion issue will become the battle-cry for women to rise up in numbers to eventually defeat the bill that will be approved... but they also will be the catalyst for getting rid of the extremists and to get voters involved to bring Texas into the 21st Century on many issues and revamp questionable leadership, which is long overdue.

Now if only the ever-growing Hispanic population will get out and register to vote and then use their huge numbers for positive change, it will happen more quickly.

Sometime within the next decade we should see the gradual change of improvement Texans need and hope for.

Once upon a time the Tea Party was a good thing, until it was taken over and abused by GOP extremists.  Overall, the "Tea Party" crazies will fail in their attempt to seize control of our federal government and our state, but they will give it a good run.

I am very hopeful that sanity and good judgment in the end will prevail.

I don't agree that the Tea Party was ever a good thing. And it sure isn't now.

It was a VERY good thing when it started out.  You probably don't really know the history of the initial Tea Party.

It started out as a wonderful grass roots movement of various communities all around the US via computer and word of mouth and the priority and plan was to hold town hall meetings with various level elected officials to try to work together in resolving issues in the best interests of the community at-large.  It was short-lived.

What happened is that the extremists in the GOP recognized that this was a good idea and that they needed to stop the initial plan of the Tea Party and take it over for their own use and causes.  Very quickly it became an extremist GOP "grass roots" organization, which pushed the plans and causes of the radical Tea Party activists, who had plenty of money contributed to the new Tea Party structure.  It is really a corporate, right to life, grandiose regime that is trying to contol the GOP.

The original Tea Party very quickly fell wayside [it was literally taken over] and it's a shame that it did.  It was a good idea but had a very short life.

The current Tea Party is a corrupt, highly extremist and aggressive attempt at taking over of our government at various levels:  Federal, State and Local.  These are dangerous people who believe in what they are doing, but no matter what they say publicly, they are out for power & control and want to dictate how the rest of us should live.

BTW, I neglected to say that the original Tea Party was a grass roots Democrat organization.

I have never seen anything to indicate the initial Tea Party movement was Democratic in origin. What is your source?

In fact, I remember that the Tea Party, which was actually Republican, was at pains to try to bring in Democrats but actually having Republican goals.

I remember this from 2009

In 2009 I considered being part of the Tea Party movement, Libertarians, Democrats, Conservatives and Independents, because it seemed to be grounded in community organization for the right reasons, including protesting outrageous government expenditures, US financial systems bailouts (George Bush), etc.

In 2010 4 of every 10 Tea Party members were Democrats or Independents.  At this point the Tea Party started to change dramatically.

Today there are even Democrats in the Tea Party and they have 1 or more Internet sites, but it has changed radically from the 2009 platform.

I never had the same perception that you did. I'm sure there are crossovers from any party, including that website link you have that shows a site with not much on it, but , at least for me, I have never been impressed and knew back in 2009 it was a Republican organization,

Then, as soon as Sarah Palin latched on, that pretty much shot out any credibility that org had. Even if there were some good facets from some of the conservative ideas originally, Tea Party is now synonymous with extremism.

Initially, it was a movement of positive ideas.  After that very brief time [a matter of months], I agree with the rest of what you say.  Obviously, I refrained from being active in it because it quickly evolved into a radical and disturbing organization.  Currently you are right in that it is an extremist organization.  My entire point is that it was initially created to do good, but quickly came under the control of the power & control extremist mongers.

With you that it definitely does not have a good rep, even if your initial perception was that it was good while mine was that it was questionable. Overall, it's funny how much effort it takes to look at every organization to see who or what is behind it, can be really exhausting.
