The anti-tax brigade 'pac' business

1 May 2013 at 11:55:16 AM

I was reading what Ron Hankins was writing in the paper and on web sites so decided to do a little follow up to what he was doing with this anti-tax brigade business. Although I usually disagree with Mr. Hankins due to his 'no harm, no foul' email responses on enforcing the open meetings act when he was County Attorney, I do agree something does not smell right here and someone in LE should be investigating.

When I looked up the person in question, I could not find they even have a Texas Drivers License, let alone a voter registration card in the state. No property ownership and the phone number says it has been active since 2008. The interesting thing here is if you do searches on the internet for that phone number, it shows up on the Glen Rose Reporter web site itself but as an ad back in January so I went ahead and grabbed a screen shot of that:

If the Glen Rose Reporter had tracked these then they would know who is doing it, the plot thickens but as Ron said someone will figure it out and prosecute those who violated the laws. I have a theory of who it could be because someone contacted me about setting up a pac. We had discussed it verbally on the phone, not with that phone number, but I never followed up with the person after that call so I suspect it could be him. There are laws when it comes to politics and the sooner the people who want to be involved read and start following those laws then they will have a clue as how to move forward with a message to influence while not violating laws in the process.

I would like to state in my opinion that although this 'pac' is aparently violating Texas Election Code rules, it does not take away from the issue that creating this property tax now will create a long-term burden on those who remain in this county. The power plant is going to devalue while moving closer to the decommission dates for the existing reactors since their licenses are not going to be renewed nor are new ones going to be built. You cannot get used to the idea that the power plant will pay for everything, it is a concept of the past and not the future; especially with their bancruptcy filing coming in the next year. The expenses we build up now are going to paid for by someone when the income from the power plant is smaller and smaller (every couple years), that's where the taxpayers are going to take a beating and this new property tax will just make it worse! As a fiscal conservative it makes absolutely no sense to put our seniors in that financial burden since everyone wants to make it a retirement community. Who will want to retire where taxes are too much for retiree's?

A New Beginning for Somervell County Hospital District
1 - salon   2 May 2013 @ 11:14:37 AM

With all the other stuff going on, hadn't paid too much attention to that until a couple of different people told me they thought Hankins had lost his mind. While I don't agree with Ron Hankins about voting FOR the hospital district, for a variety of reasons, I actually do about his pursuit with the Texas Ethics Commission. No idea who the Anti-Tax Brigade is, but whoever it is, on those ads, represented himself as a political group by the title of treasurer. If he or she IS part of a PAC and didn't follow the election rules, then that person(s) needs to be fined. Ignorance is not an excuse either if the person tries that one; there are laws for a reason.  That said, to me that whole thing is a side show issue that will be resolved by the TEC; meanwhille the question of whether citizens want a  hospital authority with no accountabiliy to the commissioners, as they are now, is more important. I'm voting AGAINST the district.
