Comanche Peak Devaluation- From $2.539 Billion to $2.2 Billion this year

So... since 80 percent of Somervell County's tax revenue comes from Comanche Peak, what happens to services when there is a shortfall? Property taxes on individuals? Yes, except that there is a strong likelihood that since Comanche Peak is devalued, so will property values, and thus less taxes coming in.

Saw an article in the Glen Rose Reporter newspaper from March 28, 2013, in which various issues for financing the county are discussed. Raising taxes, cutting services, doing something with the golf course and ampitheatre, etc.

I specifically want to talk about the raising taxes. There is a strong likelihood that EFH will declare bankruptcy by the date in 2014 when they have to start paying back the loans they took out to buy TXU. EFH has already worked to cut pensions this last year in order to pay back the money they borrowed from themselves and for which they are now being sued. Now add to that that there are less property taxes coming in, no matter what, to run the county. At a time like this, why in the world would ANYONE vote for the Somervell County Hospital District, which would then, as a separate unit no longer accountable to Somervell County Commissioners Court, be levying taxes on Somervell county citizens? What's pathetic is that the people pushing the district are trying to present this to a gullible public as "If you don't vote this in, the hospital will close". Um. NO. It Won't. Ask your commissioner what HE thinks and if you don't want to ask him, then open up and swallow any bullchit that comes your way. The Somervell Hospital authority board did NOT do due diligence in looking for other options, such as cutting services (which, um, is what the commissioners will have to do, right????) or finding out if Lake Granbury is serious about wanting to take them over. Instead, they want to charge MORE tax rate than even Somervell County uses to run its business.

Seems like citizens are more concerned about the future of the golf course than the hospital. Not me. I was around twenty or so years ago when the county was building like crazy with tax proceeds from the plant. The big argument then was what if? Well, what if is here. Personally, I think the future of our hospital is more important than the rest of it.
