Ruminations of the Easily Amused - Glen Rose City Council Technology Edition

Have long believed that every government entity should publish audio from its meetings, which most record anyway, on a publicly available website. Somervell County Water District started doing this 2-3 years ago, so that it is possible to hear what happened in open session without attending. Recently the Somervell County Commissioners Court began putting its audio online The Somervell County Hospital Authority board does NOT publish its audio, although all meetings are digitally recorded and would be a snap to make available.....

And some good news that the City of Glen Rose intends to put audio from meetings online on their website, once they complete some changes to be made that will update the courtroom to better audio and video recording. The City Administrator told me that he intends to have all recordings transferred and uploaded to the website, and that the project date for working on this will be in the April/May timeframe. He also mentiioned that he intends to use SKYPE to have citizens watch the meetings. I'm actually not sure how that would work, since, generally, skype is not a broadcasting tool but rather one in which a person can initiate a conversation with another one but perhaps this will be done in conjunction with a third party broadcasting platform. IN any event, the idea of being able to watch a city council meeting from a different location via broadcast is a great idea. Do hope this will include all city and related entities that hold open meetings.

Just imagine when you can get your news straight from the horses mouth, and hear what actually happened, ALL of it (except, of course, executive sessions) with all the nuance and context. Kudos to the Water District and the County Court for making audio available now for EVERYONE, and I hope that the Hospital Authority will follow the path of transparency as well.. and the sooner the better.

This is actually rather exciting news!  Since I currently have no time for anything other than school, work, and kids, I usually do not find out about what is happeneing with the city council for weeks.  And then when I do finally hear about it, it has already been through the rumor mill so many times that it is only a small portion of the truth.  Kudos to the city council!

With you. It's a new world. I see it kind of like the flattening out of the information age, where you can get information directly from the source, and in a timely manner, and as much or as little as you want. Like you said abour rumours, how many times have we heard something or only read part of the information but if you can see or hear it directly, you most often find out what is actually meant. And I, like you, am busy, I've been SWAMPED with a project for 2 years now and finally coming up for some air. Most of the meetings are held at times when people who work or who have families might find it difficult to attend, so, like you, I'm pretty thrilled at the ones that do put up the audio. Forgot to mention that the school board used to do it, haven't looked for awhile so not sure if they still do.

I will believe it when it happens, the city is full of unkept promises (the signed agreement with the folks on waterfall street for example has not been honored).
