Hold that applause - He criticizes the Star-Telegram for saying Good Job to Perry, when it's clear that the legislative session failed and will have have its tax cut actions corrected in the next legislative session.
Worst of all is the impression left by the Star-Telegram Editorial Board on May 22 that the Legislature has made positive steps -- "fundamental changes" -- toward solving the problem of school finance.
Although the recently passed legislation swaps local property taxes with funds from state taxes, the leadership failed to provide significant increases in school funding, meaning that pressure on school districts to raise their taxes will continue. Nearly everyone agrees that the state will be back in court to deal with school finance within the next few years. Next time, however, we will have a $5 billion annual shortfall to further inhibit our ability to find lasting solutions.
My favorite part of his editorial, however, is where he points out what is a fundamental flaw of Republican thinking versus Democrat-the idea of getting rid of government.
Maybe the Star-Telegram is justified in its lowered expectations for Perry and the leadership. Maybe the Republicans deserve a lower set of standards by which to measure their accomplishments. Their party, after all, is more concerned with destroying government than with making it work for the interests of the people it represents.
