Hah! Nuclear Lobbying Group NEI Chooses... Chairman John Young of EFH to head it

13 August 2012 at 5:37:15 PM

What a perfect marriage of corporation and lobbying, eh?

The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), the nuclear power trade group, elected John Young as chairman on July 20. The president and CEO of Dallas utllity holding company Energy Future Holdings (EFH), he succeeds William D. "Bill" Johnson, who resigned from the role and the institute board last month when he left as CEO of utility Duke Energy (ENR 7/23 p. 10). Young was NEI vice chairman. EFH owns Texas power generator Luminant Energy, retailer TXU Energy and 80% of transmission and distribution utility Oncor Electric Delivery. Young also had been executive vice president at energy firm Exelon and president of its generation unit. Johnson also is the former CEO of Progress Energy, which had agreed to a now-controversial merger with Duke Energy. Christopher Crane, Exelon CEO, was elected vice chairman of NEI, which has 350 corporate and institutional members.

That was fast. Bill Johnson was briefly head of the NEI WHILE HE HEADED Duke Energy. But oops, some possibly shady things happened. The lobbying group was fine with him being the chair as long as he was running things, but being investigated/ Not so much.

The institute, an organization of the nuclear energy and technologies industry that participates in both the national and global policymaking process, requires that the chairman of its board be an executive of a utility and that board members work for a power company.

I kind of love, don't you, that they don't call themselves LOBBYISTS, but participants in the *national and global policymaking process*

Johnson, a longtime executive of Progress Energy, resigned as CEO of Duke Energy less than a day after the two utilities merged on July 2.

For 18 months after the companies announced they would merge, Johnson was slated to become the CEO of the combined utility. But the new company's board of directors ousted Johnson and replaced him with Duke's CEO, Jim Rogers. The issue has prompted an investigation and hearings by the North Carolina Utilities Commission and attorney general's office.

Who's NEI?

P.S. EFH is cutting people's pensions. Wonder how much money they're planning to cough up out of the new sale of bonds to pay for bribing lobbying Congress?
