Son of Boss
Son of Boss and its related shelters represented perhaps the largest tax avoidance scheme in history, costing the U.S. many billions in lost corporate tax revenues. In response, the government initiated legal challenges that resulted in complete disallowance of the losses claimed by Marriott and other corporations.
In addition, the Son of Boss transaction was listed by the Internal Revenue Service as an abusive transaction, requiring specific disclosure and subject to heavy penalties. Statutory penalties were also made more stringent to deter future tax shelter activity. Finally, the government brought successful criminal prosecutions against a number of individuals involved in Son of Boss and related transactions, including principals at major law and accounting firms.
In his key role as chairman of the Marriott board's audit committee, Romney approved the firm's reporting of fictional tax losses exceeding $70 million generated by its Son of Boss transaction. His endorsement of this stratagem provides insight into Romney's professional ethics and attitude toward tax compliance obligations
Here's Presient Obama's ad-Isnt't it time for Romney to come clean?
You'll notice in this article that Mitt Romney has not yet "responded to our question about whether Romney approved the Son of Boss transaction while serving on Marriott's board of directors"
Romney continues to put out dishonest ads. Maybe it should be "I'm Mitt Romney and I approve this message, no matter what it is"
“Gov. Romney released an ad today alleging that the Obama administration had weakened the work requirements of the 1996 Welfare Reform Act. That is not true,” Clinton said in a statement from his office at the Clinton Foundation released late Tuesday night.
The ad says that Obama “quietly announced a plan to gut welfare reform by dropping work requirements. Under Obama’s plan, you wouldn’t have to work and wouldn’t have to train for a job. They just send you your welfare check.”
Clinton said the waiver policy was enacted at the request of GOP governors from Utah and Nevada who wanted more flexibility in their programs. Moreover, he said it will not “gut” the program.
“The administration has taken important steps to ensure that the work requirement is retained and that waivers will be granted only if a state can demonstrate that more people will be moved into work under its new approach,” Clinton said. “The welfare time limits, another important feature of the 1996 act, will not be waived.”
1. This Romney–the guy who invented what the Herald called “Welfare Wheels”–is the same guy who launched on Rick Perry during the primaries for offering college scholarships to the children of illegal immigrants. In fact, he’s still against–maybe, I guess, but we can’t be too sure, because, well, he’s refusing to answer the question–the federal Dream Act, which would grant citizenship to such children who graduated college or served into the military. But cars for welfare recipients was, somehow, just fine. (By the way, I applaud Romney’s program and congratulate him on the 80% success rate.)
2. How incompetent is the Romney campaign? They keep coming up with these stupid gambits–the last was the lie that Obama opposed early voting for members of the military in Ohio–that are shot down instantaneously (everywhere but in Fox-Rush land). And worse, the Democrats–who seem to have a superior oppo team–can often produce counter-stories, like the Herald item, that make things even worse for Romney.
Okay, here's some hilarity. An ad that is NOT endorsed by Obama but was created by a Super Pac (you remember, the Supreme Court citizen United opened the door to this stuff and said the campaigns cannot coordinate with the Pacs) is apparently wrong. Here's what Robert Gibbs said about it.
Gibbs, said on Wednesday on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, said, "This is an ad by an entity that’s not controlled by the campaign. I certainly don't know the specifics of this man's case.”
Gibbs, though, did not back down from the claims made in the ad, saying Bain was responsible for laying workers off, who then lost their health coverage.
“Bain always got paid,” he said. “Bain got paid hundreds of millions of dollars in many instances, and these companies went bankrupt. And when a company goes bankrupt like that, somebody gives you a piece of paper that says you've lost your job, you've lost your health care, you've lost your retirement.”
Republicans have blasted the ad as derisive and unfair. When pressed, Gibbs said that if the ad was inaccurate, it should not run in the first place.
“I think people will decide whether it's factual, fact checkers will decide whether or not it's factual,” he said. “I'm saying if the ad is not true, then … it's not going to be effective, and if there's an ad that's not true, it shouldn't be running.”
Romney's followers are trying to say it's an Obama -endorsed ad, which it is not. But here's what's even more hilarious.
Haha. Romney spokesman touts Mitt Romney's Romneycare from MA (universal health care, mandatory, etc)-clueless campaign, eh, if Romney doesn't want to remind people that his Romneycare is the MODEL for the Affordable Health Care Act. Think Romney tells her DON'T HELP ME! Which is it, Romney, do you LIKE the individual mandate or do you not? bwahahahahah.
“To that point, if people had been in Massachusetts, under Governor Romney’s health care plan, they would have had health care,” Andrea Saul, Romney’s campaign press secretary, said during an appearance on Fox News. “There are a lot of people losing their jobs and losing their health care in President [Barack] Obama’s economy.”
Where to start? Romney, as we all know, adopted a health care law as governor of Massachusetts that was a model for President Obama’s national health care law. Both laws force individuals to purchase insurance, expand Medicaid and provide subsidies for individuals to purchase government-designed insurance policies on government-run exchanges. Throughout his campaign, Romney has been performing a delicate balancing act, defending his own plan while calling for the repeal of Obamacare. But Saul’s response here creates a huge opening for defenders of the national health care law.
AND this has ticked off *conservatives* who didn't like Romney but sucked it up USA Today
"Conservatives have put aside their distrust of Romney on this issue in the name of beating Barack Obama," he wrote. "They thought he and his campaign team had gotten the message and the hints. Consider the scab picked, the wound opened, and the distrust trickling out again."
