If you can't accept Foreign money for campaign donations but money is SECRET....

Here is an obvious conflict. In January of this year, the SCOTUS ruled that campaigns cannot take foreign money. BUT, as we all know now, there are SuperPacs that are POURING money into the campaigns this year and no one has to say where the money is coming from, also due to the SCOTUS.

Here's Justice Stevens on that.

Stevens said he agreed with President Barack Obama's criticism of the ruling - that it reversed a century of law, that it authorized unlimited election-related expenditure by America's most powerful interests and that the logic of the opinion extended to money spent by foreign entities.

As a reminder, here is what President Obama said during the State of the Union address

Obama's criticism was delivered in his 2010 State of the Union address, with a number of the Supreme Court justices present. Conservative Justice Samuel Alito could be seen mouthing the words "not true" in response to Obama's comments.

Stevens said that in the future, the court would have to issue an opinion explicitly crafting an exception to the 2010 ruling to make clear it does not extend to foreign corporations.

He said the fact that corporations had no right to vote should give Congress the power to exclude them from direct participation in the electoral process.

Well, Mitt Romney would disagree with that. Remember, he believes that corporations are people.

So, was President Obama correct? Yes.

Some of the money came from well-established concerns, like Alpha Natural Resources, one of the country’s largest coal companies, which is backing Republican-aligned American Crossroads, or from the Service Employees International Union, a powerful union allied with Democrats, according to filings with the Federal Election Commission.

Some came from companies closely identified with prominent industrialists or financiers, like Contran, a mammoth holding company controlled by the Texas billionaire Harold Simmons, a patron of a number of conservative groups and candidates, and Blue Ridge Capital, a New York hedge fund founded by the wealthy investor John A. Griffin, a supporter of Mitt Romney.

But some checks came from sources obscured from public view, like a $250,000 contribution to a super PAC backing Mr. Romney from a company with a post office box for a headquarters and no known employees.

This has nothing to do with which party or affiliates raises the most money. It is, instead, a question of fairness as well as openness. IF one says that corporations can spend all types of money, then any citizen should be able to know exactly who or what each dollare represents-otherwise, it looks like bribery, pure and simple, and we cannot know what the campaign donors might hope to get for their bribe.
