Reminder that it wasn't until 1978, when Mitt Romney was 31 years old, that a revelation came down to the Mormon elders that blacks were no longer satanic and cursed by God. Mormonism and the anti-black doctrine

Part 2   Part 3   Part 4

And "Is there no blessing for me?"

Although Jane Elizabeth James fervently believed she was a model member of the LDS church, she was also well aware of the restrictions placed on her because of her race and gender. Mormon theological teachings held that blacks were descendants of Ham whose curse by his father, Noah, denied him and his seed the priesthood. Blacks were also said by some Mormon leaders to be the descendants of Cain and thus the heirs of God's displeasure with Cain for slaying his brother, Abel. Still other Saints described blacks fo descendants of the people of Canaan sho, in their unrighteousness, became despised and had a curse placed on them. Such nineteenth-century beliefs about inherent black wickedness were hardely unique to Mormonism. They were widely shared among theologians of various demoninations and were the foundation for the "biblical defense" of Southern slavery.

Given this significant belief system, church involvement for Mormon blacks was subject to various restrictions. After 1849 African American males were ineligible for the priesthood, a central tenet of Mormon life. Black Mormons, male and female, could not have temple marriages or receive endowments, two rituals that are prerequisites to the Mormon concept of worthiness. Denial of endowments was especially crucial. Mormons believed that endowments were necessary to enter the highest degree of their tripartite celestial kingdown. Without endowments, African Americans were assigned to the lowest levels of the mutitiered kingdown of the afterlife.

Her request to receive endowments was denied.

President Wilford Woodruff said "This I would not do as it was against the Law of God. As Cain killed Abel, all the seed of Cain would have to wait for redemption."... However, they allowed her to be adopted into the Joseph Smith family as a servant.

The First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints lifeted the 129 year priesthood ban on African American males on June 7 1978, over seventy years after Jane Elizabeth Manning James died. The church refused, however, to rescind the ban for women of any color.
